Toyota Revives the Classic Land Cruiser With a Modern Twin-Turbo Twist
The iconic FJ60 returns with a powerful 3.4L twin-turbo V6 and lifted off-road performance.
Toyota is turning heads at the 2025 SEMA Show with the Turbo Trail Cruiser, a one-off concept built on the vintage FJ60 platform. This special build combines classic 1980s styling with a thoroughly modern powertrain, delivering 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, nearly double the original inline-six output. The result is a vehicle that maintains its retro charm while gaining impressive performance, refinement, and streetability.
Heart of the Beast: A Tundra Twin-Turbo V6
At the core of the Turbo Trail Cruiser is Toyota’s 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 from the latest Tundra. Engineers designed custom mounts, a redesigned oil pan, a dedicated heat exchanger, and a specialized wiring harness to fit the engine seamlessly into the classic chassis. An adapter plate allows connection to the original five-speed manual transmission, while a bespoke exhaust system enhances the aggressive, high-performance character.
Suspension and Off-Road Capability
Beneath the nostalgic body, the FJ60 retains its original ladder-frame chassis but adds a 1.5-inch suspension lift and front shackle reversal for improved articulation. It rides on polished beadlock wheels with 35-inch tires, combining vintage aesthetics with modern off-road capability. Despite these upgrades, the exterior remains faithful to the 1980s design, with original halogen headlights and untouched body panels.

Interior Upgrades With Subtle Modern Touches
Inside, the Turbo Trail Cruiser features a JBL stereo system and a central touchscreen mounted on the retro dashboard, blending functionality with heritage. The cabin stays largely classic, preserving the FJ60’s nostalgic feel, while integrating just enough technology to enhance the driving experience without compromising its vintage appeal.
Toyota’s Vision: Iconic Classics Meet Modern Performance
Marty Schwerter, Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Garage, explains: “The Turbo Trail Cruiser shows what happens when modern Toyota performance technology meets one of our most iconic classics. It’s a hot-rod approach with Toyota DNA—power, drivability, and reliability—while remaining true to the original Land Cruiser.” The Turbo Trail Cruiser joins other standout concepts like the Camry GT-S and Corolla Cross Hybrid Nasu at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
