Toyota GR010 Hypercar Gets Major Aero Update for WEC 2026

By  |

Toyota aims to reclaim its dominance at Le Mans with an upgraded GR010 Hypercar featuring advanced aerodynamics for the 2026 WEC season.

Toyota will introduce the first significant update to its GR010 HYBRID Le Mans Hypercar since 2022, focusing on aerodynamic enhancements to improve speed and handling. According to Kazuki Nakajima, vice-chairman of Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe, the goal is to return to the winner’s circle at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Toyota has struggled against rivals in recent seasons.

Testing and Development Plans

The upgraded GR010 is set for its first testing session in early October at Paul Ricard, following development under the evo joker rules of the Hypercar class. Toyota’s team, led by Kamui Kobayashi, plans to create a car capable of performing at the top even when constrained by Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations, including maximum weight and minimum power limits.

Aerodynamic Innovations

The new aero package will be tested in the full-size Windshear wind tunnel in North Carolina, replacing the previous Sauber facility. Toyota’s upgrades aim to address previous shortcomings, including reduced top speed relative to rivals, and optimize the GR010’s performance within Hypercar regulations. These developments are part of Toyota’s strategy to maximize efficiency while maintaining high-speed stability and cornering grip.

Past Upgrades and Evo Joker Strategy

Toyota has previously applied performance upgrades in 2022 and 2023, including adjustments to tire sizing to comply with LMH and LMDh regulations. The team is allowed seven evo jokers until Hypercar homologation ends in 2029, and the 2026 aero update will count toward these, giving Toyota a strategic edge for the upcoming WEC season.

Looking Ahead to Le Mans 2026

With these improvements, the GR010 Hypercar is set to challenge Ferrari and other Hypercar rivals in the 2026 WEC season. Toyota’s focus on aerodynamics, high-speed performance, and regulatory compliance signals a renewed push for victory at Le Mans and throughout the endurance racing calendar. Fans can expect testing and further updates as the team prepares for the season opener.
