Honda Unveils Prelude GT500: The Next Super GT Contender for 2026
Honda returns to the coupe formula with the Prelude GT500, aiming to challenge the Toyota Supra and Nissan Z in the 2026 Super GT season.
Honda has revealed the Prelude GT500 as its next-generation Super GT car, set to debut in 2026. Based on the newly launched Prelude sports coupe, the GT500 replaces the Civic Type R-GT, which has competed since 2024. While the Civic Type R delivered only a single race win, the Prelude is designed to push Honda to higher performance levels under the upcoming aero regulation changes.
Technical and Strategic Advantages
According to HRC’s Super GT project leader Masahiro Saeki, the switch to a coupe-bodied Prelude allows for improved aerodynamics and chassis development, offering opportunities the four-door Civic could not. The Prelude will take full advantage of the 2026 rule changes, which will lift the current aero freeze, enabling Honda to extract maximum performance potential from its GT500 package.
Testing and Race Debut
The Prelude-GT will begin its shakedown at Sugo, followed by extensive winter testing. The car is set to make its competitive debut at the 2026 Super GT opener in Okayama on April 11-12, going head-to-head with established GT500 rivals like the Toyota Supra and Nissan Z. Honda’s engineers are focusing on combining production car knowledge with advanced Super GT technology to gain a competitive edge.

Honda’s Vision for Performance
Honda emphasizes that the Prelude GT500 is more than a race car—it’s a platform to bring future production sports cars to market. The return of the coupe layout presents both a challenge and an opportunity to refine vehicle dynamics, while continuing to deliver results that reinforce Honda’s motorsport pedigree. Fans of the Civic Type R are encouraged to continue following Honda’s efforts in Super Taikyu and global TCR series.
Looking Ahead
With the Prelude GT500, Honda is signaling a bold shift in its Super GT strategy, prioritizing track performance, aerodynamic efficiency, and development flexibility. As the 2026 season approaches, the Japanese manufacturer is ready to leverage its coupe-based platform to contend with the Supra and Z, ensuring a high-stakes battle in the GT500 category that fans won’t want to miss.
