Toyota Gave Its Most Common Car a Finish Worth Showing Off For 2026

By  |

The most notable update is the introduction, for the first time, of a matte paint finish on high-volume models, enhancing the model’s premium image.

The twelfth-generation Toyota Corolla receives an update for the 2026 model year in Europe. While the brand unveiled a dramatic concept in October previewing the model’s future, the current car is not going anywhere soon. The biggest change in this update centers on the exterior paint.

For the first time, Toyota is offering the Corolla in a Matte Onyx Grey finish. This color will be limited to the GR Sport and Touring Sports versions. The arrival of this finish marks the company’s first use of this color on a high-volume production model. It will be available in the UK before the end of the year and roll out to other European markets shortly after.

New Color Tones and Minor Interior Tweaks

In addition to the exclusive matte finish, the company introduces a second new color for 2026. This shade, dubbed Storm Grey, is a metallic color that suits the Corolla quite nicely. It will be offered in both sedan and hatchback guises.

Toyota has also made some minor tweaks inside. More of its hard-wearing Samara upholstery is now added to the seatbacks and cushions. This material is made from recycled materials. The use of Samara upholstery applies to the Mid and Touring Sports grade models. Additionally, the Mid+ Sedan model includes a distinctive Samara seat design.

Hybrid Powertrains Remain Unchanged

Apart from these aesthetic and upholstery changes, the Corolla shows no other modifications. As such, the model continues to be available with 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter hybrid engines. The smaller engine delivers 138 hp, while the 2.0-liter engine is rated at 178 hp.

Curiously, the 2025 model with the 2.0-liter engine had been listed as delivering 193 hp. Toyota has not explained why 15 horses have gone missing in the new version.

Standard Technology and Safety

All 2026 models will retain the Toyota Safety Sense package. This, alongside the multimedia system, supports over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Furthermore, Toyota will continue to sell all variants with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster as standard equipment. This panel is the same one used by the flagship GR Corolla.
