INTELLIGENT MOBILITY
This Is the Best Way to Photograph a Porsche: A 718 Boxster S Transformed into a Camera Car
A group of Porsche Leipzig apprentices turned a 718 Boxster S into a high-performance camera car designed to capture the essence of motorsport with precision and creativity.
Photographing a sports car on track is never a simple task – it demands a perfect balance of speed, stability, and safety. From this challenge, nine apprentices at Porsche Leipzig GmbH embarked on an ambitious mission: transforming a Porsche 718 Boxster S into a fully functional camera car.
The project began in 2017 as part of Porsche’s internal training program and remained largely secret until now, when the brand officially revealed it along with impressive photos showcasing the team’s craftsmanship and innovation.
A Porsche Turned into a Professional Tool
Guided by supervisor Carsten Pohle, the young technicians stripped the Boxster down to its essentials, removed the roof, and installed a reinforced roll bar. They repainted the car in matte black to eliminate reflections and guarantee crystal-clear images.
To allow cameras to be mounted from any angle, the team added custom steel tube mounts on the bumpers, sides, and rear. Inside, both trunks were padded and fitted with safety harnesses to protect the photographer during high-speed shoots – effectively turning this roadster into a mobile film studio.
Technology Meets Creativity
This unique Porsche combines engineering precision with digital innovation. A securely mounted laptop inside the cockpit connects directly to the cameras through an internal wiring harness, while an onboard power inverter supplies energy for all filming equipment.
The setup allows for seamless real-time video capture, transforming every lap into a cinematic experience. It’s a perfect example of how Porsche blends education, innovation, and passion to shape the next generation of automotive specialists.

A New Symbol of Porsche’s Learning Culture
Beyond its technical prowess, this project represents the spirit of mentorship and collaboration that defines Porsche’s culture. The apprentices not only developed mechanical skills but also learned about teamwork, design thinking, and creative problem-solving – all essential in today’s rapidly evolving automotive industry.
Projects like this strengthen the connection between Porsche’s heritage of excellence and the future of mobility, ensuring that the brand continues to inspire innovation at every level.
The 718 Boxster S camera car has already proved itself on the Leipzig test circuit and has been used in several professional productions – including shoots featuring racing legend Walter Röhrl.
Its most recent appearance took place at the Tutto Bene Hillclimb near Lake Maggiore, showcasing its versatility, functionality, and dynamic performance. A creation born from youthful ingenuity and the pursuit of perfection – a Porsche made not just to drive, but to immortalize speed itself.
