The Jeep Wagoneer 2000: A Bizarre Concept That Tried to Predict the Future Luxury SUV
Jeep unveiled the Wagoneer 2000 at the 1991 Detroit Auto Show, just before retiring the long-running Wagoneer model. This prototype aimed to imagine the future of the luxury SUV at the turn of the century.
The 1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer is often considered the pioneer of the luxury SUV. Despite its short run , the segment took off in the 1990s with models like the Lexus LX, Cadillac Escalade, and BMW X5. Jeep retired the Wagoneer in 1991, just before luxobarges became popular.
The Wagoneer 2000, unveiled at the 1991 Detroit Auto Show , was the brand’s attempt to predict the future. The brand claimed that 20th-century luxury trains inspired the styling. Nevertheless, its appearance reminded people of the almost forgotten Mercedes R-Class. The design turned out to be a peculiar mix of a minivan and a wagon, featuring a “deeply depressed”-looking front end.
Luxury Interior and Impressive Dimensions
The concept could accommodate six people with individual swivel captain’s chairs. Alternatively, Jeep envisioned bench seats for the second and third rows. A notable feature was the ability to access removable “stadium seats” when opening the tailgate , a feature found today in the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Other details included a pop-up roof rack that sat flush with the body when not in use , and a movable entertainment center with a TV/VCR/CD player. Because luxury was associated with wood at the time, the interior made generous use of this material.

Additionally, the concept stood out because of its imposing size. It measured 198.1 inches (5.03 meters) long, 80.3 inches (2.04 meters) wide, and 67.5 inches (1.71 meters) tall. Its wheelbase stretched to a gigantic 138 inches (3.5 meters), maximizing interior space. This vehicle rode on large 20-inch wheels.
Combustion Mechanics and the Name’s Legacy
Underneath the arched hood, the Wagoneer 2000 hid a 5.2-liter V8 engine with 220 horsepower. This sent power to both axles through a four-speed automatic transmission. Jeep engineered the oddball SUV with disc brakes all around and an independent suspension featuring front and rear torsion bars.
Thankfully, Jeep never followed up with a production version sporting this unorthodox styling. However, it did resurrect the Wagoneer name for a flagship Grand Cherokee (ZJ) trim a couple of years later. The moniker returned in 2022 for a standalone model with gasoline engines, and since 2024, Stellantis also sells a fully electric Wagoneer S. Despite its failed design, the idea behind the Wagoneer 2000 as a plush SUV was solid.
