The ID. Unyx 08 Breaks the Mold: Volkswagen Unveils a Completely Different Electric SUV for China

By  |

Volkswagen is launching a new aesthetic designed for the world’s largest market. The ID. Unyx 08 is a model co-developed with Xpeng.

The Volkswagen Group has enjoyed great success in China for decades. However, those days of absolute dominance are over. The rise of local manufacturers with affordable, high-tech cars forced a change in strategy. These manufacturers are making a serious dent in the balance sheets of legacy brands. Volkswagen’s new strategy is clear: if you can’t beat them, join them.

Unprecedented Design and Cutting-Edge Technology

Audi signed an agreement with SAIC to create a localized brand without the iconic four rings. Similarly, Volkswagen’s new ID. Unyx 08 looks nothing like its global models. This vehicle was co-developed with Xpeng. Therefore, the EV represents a fresh design start for China. It is a styling language developed specifically for the largest automotive market. Without the badges, identifying it as a Volkswagen would be almost impossible.

The new electric SUV boasts notable details. It includes Brembo brakes and a wolf motif integrated into the brake light. Flush door handles are not a surprise. In fact, frameless doors are an interesting premium touch. Essentially, the Unyx 08 is the production version of the ID. Evo concept. Volkswagen Anhui builds it in China.

Larger Than a Touareg and Featuring Ultra-Fast Charging

At 5,000 millimeters long, this SUV is larger than a Touareg. Nevertheless, it is smaller than an Atlas. Its dedicated EV platform allows for a notably long wheelbase. According to local reports, the model shares much with the Xpeng G9. Homologation documents confirm single- and dual-motor variants. The top-spec version will deliver nearly 500 horsepower.

The LFP battery is supplied by CATL. It provides over 700 kilometers of range (under the CLTC standard). Volkswagen highlights its 800-volt ultra-fast charging capability. This model was developed at the largest R&D center outside Germany. Sales are slated to begin in the first half of next year. The ID. Unyx 08 is part of the “In China, for China” initiative.
