The BYD Qin Concept: the hybrid sedan that changed automotive history and propelled China to global dominance
More than a decade ago, BYD unveiled a prototype that transformed its destiny and redefined the future of electric mobility. Today, that vision stands as a symbol of global technological success.

The car that changed everything
Did you know that the BYD Qin Concept from 2012 was the starting point of China’s electric revolution? Revealed at the Beijing Auto Show, this plug-in hybrid prototype marked the moment when BYD stopped following and started leading the automotive world. At a time when electrification was still in its infancy, the Qin made a bold statement: efficiency, design, and performance could coexist at the level of the most prestigious international manufacturers.
2012: the year BYD found its identity
From a design perspective, the Qin Concept showcased a remarkable maturity for a brand still searching for its own identity. Its classic sedan proportions, sharp LED headlamps, and horizontal rear light signature conveyed solidity and sophistication. Compared to earlier models, the leap forward was undeniable. Inside, the tech-focused and driver-oriented cabin brought BYD into a new era: digital instruments, higher-quality materials, and a layout that foreshadowed what we now consider standard in premium electric vehicles.
A hybrid heart that anticipated the future
Under the sleek bodywork lay the DM (Dual Mode) technology, a pioneering plug-in hybrid architecture that combined a petrol engine with an electric motor capable of powering the car in full EV mode. With over 300 hp in the most powerful versions, it proved that performance and efficiency could go hand in hand. That concept paved the way for the first production Qin in 2013, solidifying BYD’s long-term strategy toward full electrification.
From the Qin Concept to the BYD empire
Over the years, the legacy of the Qin Concept has evolved into a full-fledged family of models that cemented BYD’s dominance. The Qin Plus arrived with greater refinement and efficiency, available as both a DM-i plug-in hybrid and a fully electric BEV. Most recently, the brand launched the Qin L, offered as a hybrid DM-i or as the Qin L EV, unveiled in 2025. Built on the ePlatform 3.0, it represents the pinnacle of BYD’s innovation — offering a larger cabin, youthful design, and smarter energy management.
The seed of a global leader
Today, BYD has overtaken Hyundai to become the fourth best-selling carmaker in the world. What began as a battery manufacturer in 1995 has grown into a global powerhouse spanning cars, rail transport, and energy solutions. More than ten years later, the Qin Concept wasn’t just a design exercise — it was a turning point in the evolution of the Chinese automotive industry. A perfect example of how vision, technology, and determination can reshape the entire future of mobility.
