The Audi A2 Returns in 2026: The Iconic Compact Comes Back as a 340 HP Electric Car

Audi is bringing back one of its most beloved models — the A2 — now fully electric and more powerful than ever. Here’s everything we know about the reborn compact that aims to redefine urban mobility.

Audi is set to revive one of the most iconic names in its modern history, the Audi A2, a compact that left a lasting mark in the early 2000s. This time, it returns as a 100% electric vehicle, expected to debut officially during 2026. According to images captured from a webcam atop Austria’s Edelweiss Spitze Pass, the prototype reveals compact proportions and sleek lines, preserving the original’s aerodynamic and practical essence while embracing cutting-edge design.

Design: Heritage Meets Innovation

The first test units show a closed front grille typical of Audi’s electric lineup, combined with sharp headlights and a descending rear end reminiscent of the original A2. Measuring approximately 4.2 meters in length, the new A2 e-tron will become Audi’s smallest zero-emission model, likely replacing both the A1 Sportback and the Q2, which are expected to be discontinued soon.

Built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB Platform

Technically, the A2 e-tron will ride on the MEB modular platform, shared with the Volkswagen ID.3, CUPRA Born, and Audi Q4 e-tron. This flexible architecture allows multiple powertrain and range configurations, starting with a rear-mounted motor producing 204 HP and a 59 kWh battery, and potentially extending to a sporty S or RS variant with around 340 HP, all-wheel drive, and a 79 kWh battery. Those specs would place it among the most powerful electric compacts in its class.

A Minimalist, Tech-Forward Cabin

Inside, the A2 e-tron is expected to follow a minimalist and sustainable design philosophy, featuring dual digital displays, eco-friendly materials, and broad personalization options. Audi aims to deliver a clean, premium, and intuitive user experience, emphasizing comfort and accessibility for all types of drivers.

Price and Market Outlook

Although official pricing remains under wraps, early estimates suggest a starting price near €35,000, positioning it as one of the most appealing premium electric compacts available. Ultimately, the new Audi A2 e-tron combines heritage, innovation, and performance, signaling the return of a beloved classic tailored for the future of electric mobility.
