TATA SIERRA: The “Baby Land Rover” Resurrects in India with a Shockingly Low Price
The new Sierra arrives with near concept-car styling, modern technology, and a starting price that feels astonishingly affordable. It is a vehicle that could rival Range Rover in aesthetics, but not in cost.
The Sierra has re-entered the market strongly, maintaining remarkable faithfulness to the concept presented in 2023. Its squared-off silhouette and rugged stance lend it a distinctive air. In fact, the design recalls Land Rover vehicles, an interesting detail considering Tata’s ownership of JLR.
Retro design meets contemporary details. The strong B-pillar and wraparound rear glass nod to the original three-door Sierra from 1991. In contrast, modern details include glossy black cladding, aluminum-effect skid plates, and an upright tail capped with full-width LEDs. The base version rides on 17-inch steel wheels. Conversely, top trims are presented with more polished 19-inch alloy wheels. The overall design would fit perfectly alongside a modern Freelander or a compact Defender.
High-Tech Interior with an Emphasis on Comfort
Stepping inside the cabin, the Sierra greets you with a triple-screen setup. This includes a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a matching 12.3-inch passenger display.
The options list runs deep. It contains a 12-speaker JBL system with a dashboard sound bar, ambient lighting, and dual-zone climate control. Furthermore, it offers features like wireless charging, ventilated seats, and what Tata calls the largest panoramic sunroof in its class. Tata promises a comfortable and roomy five-seat cabin. This is finished with soft-touch materials and offers a 622-liter boot. Safety is paramount, with six airbags standard and an ADAS suite that includes Level 2+ autonomous driving features.
Powertrain Diversity on the ARGOS Platform
The Sierra rides on Tata’s new ARGOS platform (All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, and Geometry Scalable architecture). This architecture is designed to support multiple powertrain types.

At launch, the Sierra will be available with three engine options. First, a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 105 hp. Second, a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 158 hp. Finally, a 1.5-liter turbodiesel generating 116 hp. Drivers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual gearbox, a seven-speed dual-clutch, or a six-speed automatic. For now, all versions are front-wheel drive with selectable terrain modes. However, all-wheel drive is planned for the future. Subsequently, the lineup will expand to include fully electric, hybrid, and CNG options.
Competitive Pricing and Market Exclusivity
The price is arguably the Sierra’s biggest talking point. Tata has announced a starting figure of ₹11.49 lakh (around $12,800 USD). This price point positions it as a strong value in its class. It is important to note that it lands just above the Hyundai Creta, which starts from ₹10.72 lakh ($12,100 USD).
Orders for the Sierra open on December 16, with deliveries beginning January 16. For the time being, Tata has confirmed that the model will be sold exclusively in India, with no export plans currently on the table.
