If you are a fan of hybrid SUVs, you might immediately think of Chinese models like the MG ZS Hybrid+ or the Omoda 5 SHS-H. However, the Subaru Forester S:HEV breaks the mold by coming from Japan and combining a boxer gasoline engine, Symmetrical AWD, and Toyota hybrid technology. This crossover is one of the most awaited hybrids among European customers.

Hybrid with a Japanese Heart and Toyota Partnership

The new powertrain delivers 197 combined HP, thanks to a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer engine producing 165 HP, paired with a 122 HP electric motor developed in collaboration with Toyota. Its 1.1 kWh battery allows the vehicle to maintain the Eco label and reduces fuel consumption to 6.2 liters per 100 km, compared to 8.1 liters in the previous hybrid Forester. This represents a significant efficiency improvement while keeping permanent all-wheel drive and the Lineartronic automatic transmission, which can be operated via paddles for a more dynamic driving experience.

More Powerful and Efficient than the RAV4

The Forester S:HEV surpasses the new Toyota RAV4 hybrid in power, which offers between 183 and 191 HP depending on the version. Additionally, it claims a range of over 1,000 km in Japan, making it a direct competitor to Toyota in Europe. Both models are expected to arrive in the Spanish market in 2026, setting the stage for an exciting rivalry in the hybrid SUV segment.

Price Estimates: Around €45,000

Although in Japan the Subaru Forester S:HEV starts at €25,500 at current exchange rates, in Spain the price is expected to be close to €45,000, very similar to the Toyota RAV4. Both SUVs promise maximum reliability, maintaining the high standards typical of Subaru and Toyota, ensuring a perfect balance of efficiency, power, and durability for European drivers.

With the Forester S:HEV, Subaru strengthens its position in the hybrid SUV segment, offering a model that combines Japanese tradition, technological collaboration with Toyota, and a clear focus on efficiency and performance. It is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated launches of 2026.
