Smart has long left behind its image as a maker of tiny city cars. The new Smart #5, born from the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, arrives as a premium electric SUV offering generous size and serious performance. Measuring 4.70 metres in length and delivering up to 637 hp, this model places the German manufacturer in the same league as the Kia EV6 and, more importantly, the Tesla Model Y, matching them in both ambition and innovation.

Design and interior: a complete step up in quality

Step inside and it becomes clear just how far Smart has come. The cabin feels spacious, solid and upmarket, with a 13-inch central touchscreen controlling most of the vehicle’s functions. Although some fake carbon-fibre trim feels a little cheap, overall fit and finish are impressive. The 630-litre rear boot, plus an extra 74 litres in the front, and 32 storage compartments throughout reinforce the #5’s family-friendly and practical character.

Versions, range and performance

The Smart #5 range includes five trims – Pro, Pro+, Pulse, Summit Edition and Premium – with batteries ranging from 76 to 100 kWh. The sweet spot is the Pro+, offering 589 km (366 miles) of range and ultra-fast charging at 426 kW, thanks to its 800-volt architecture. At the top sits the wild Brabus version, boasting 637 hp, though this level of power is overkill for everyday family use. Rear-wheel-drive versions deliver a smooth, silent and predictable drive, ideal for daily commuting and long-distance comfort.

Driving experience and comfort

Despite its size and weight, the Smart #5 achieves an excellent balance between comfort and stability. The suspension absorbs bumps and rough surfaces effectively, while cabin insulation is on par with models from higher segments. On twisty roads, it controls body roll remarkably well, maintaining poise and precision through corners. However, the lane-keeping assist can feel overly intrusive on narrow country roads, though it’s easy to switch off when desired.

Conclusion: Smart’s most mature and competitive car yet

The new Smart #5 completely redefines what the brand stands for, confidently entering the premium electric SUV segment. Its advanced technology, spacious interior and strong performance make it a highly compelling option, fully capable of challenging established players like the Tesla Model Y or Hyundai Ioniq 5. With a well-rounded package and far higher perceived quality than expected, this Smart proves the brand is now playing in an entirely new league.
