Saab 9000 (1985-1998): The Swedish Quadruple That Made History
The Saab 9000 combined luxury, safety, and performance, sharing its platform with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema, and Alfa Romeo 164.

With the Saab 9000, the Swedish brand entered the luxury sedan segment for the first time over four decades ago, building on the success of the 99 and turbocharged 900 models. Developed between 1979 and 1984 by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Björn Envall, it was built on the Tipo Quattro platform, shared with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema, and Alfa Romeo 164, but with additional safety reinforcements that set the Saab apart from its Italian siblings.
Design, Space, and Versatility
The 9000 was offered in four- and five-door body styles, with a surprisingly spacious interior despite its 4.62-meter length and a 2.67-meter wheelbase. The trunk held 470 liters, expandable to 1,600 liters with the rear seats folded. Over its production, variants such as the Combi Coupé (CC), Combi Sedan (CS), and Corps Diplomatique (CD) emerged, adapting the sedan to a variety of European market needs and tastes.
Engines and Special Versions

The Saab 9000 featured four-cylinder engines of 2 and 2.3 liters, and starting in 1994, a 3-liter V6 from General Motors. Turbo models, like the 9000 Aero, Carlsson, and Talladega, offered up to 225 hp, sports suspensions, and luxurious equipment, while trims like the Griffin combined automatic transmission, dual-zone rear air conditioning, and exclusive interior and paint details, solidifying Saab’s reputation for comfort and safety.
Production and Legacy
A total of 503,087 units were produced: 216,385 CC (1985-1991), 174,525 CS (1992-1998), and 112,177 CD (1988-1997). Production of the CD/E sedan ended in 1997, with the last 9000 rolling off the line in May 1998, marking the end of an era, soon succeeded by the Saab 9-5, continuing the tradition of innovative Swedish luxury sedans.
The Swedish Quadruple That Set Trends
The Saab 9000 stood out not only for its shared Italian heritage but also for its balance of luxury, performance, and safety, becoming a benchmark of its time. With sporty variants, comfort-oriented sedans, and high-performance turbo versions, the 9000 proved that a car could be safe, elegant, and powerful at the same time, leaving an indelible mark in Saab’s history and the European luxury sedan segment.
