Pure Off-Road for €14,500: The Niva Travel Europe Wishes It Could Buy

The budget-friendly 4×4 that could shake up the market if it ever reached Spain.

A modern heir that preserves the legend’s spirit

The iconic Lada Niva has always been synonymous with toughness, simplicity and the ability to push through where others get stuck. Now, the Niva Travel inherits that legacy and adapts it to a more SUV-oriented format, without losing any of its authentic off-road DNA. With 4.09 metres in length and a 2.45-metre wheelbase, this compact Russian stands as a natural alternative to the Suzuki Jimny or even the returning Fiat Panda 4×4, while maintaining the essence of a true 4×4.

Off-road capabilities that impress at this price point

This is where the key lies: its performance off the beaten path. The Niva Travel features all-wheel drive with a low-range gearbox and a locking centre differential, ensuring a 50/50 mechanical torque split between both axles. With 22 centimetres of ground clearance, a full-size spare wheel mounted on the tailgate and, in the Comfort Off-Road trim, Michelin X-Ice North 4 tyres, a snorkel and underbody protection, this model is fully prepared to tackle rough, snowy or muddy terrain with ease.

Robust looks outside, dated inside – but built to last

On the outside, the Travel looks surprisingly contemporary, anticipating today’s trend of boxy-style SUVs such as the Dacia Duster or the JAECOO 7. Inside, the design is clearly old-school, but everything feels solid and ready for harsh use. The classic lever to switch traction modes is a welcome touch for off-road purists, while the floating central screen adds a modern but uncomplicated note.

Why Europe can’t have it… at least for now

Two major obstacles stand in the way. First, Russia remains under EU trade sanctions due to the war in Ukraine. Second, its naturally aspirated 1.7-litre 80 hp petrol engine falls far short of current European emissions standards. This makes it impossible to homologate in Spain, despite what would undoubtedly be a highly appealing price: €14,580 at today’s exchange rate, an unbeatable figure for a genuine off-roader in 2026.

The affordable 4×4 we’d love to import

In short, the Niva Travel is the kind of vehicle many enthusiasts would value for its toughness, mechanical simplicity and true off-road capability. A real 4×4 for €14,500 is virtually unheard of in Europe, making it one of the most desirable models outside our market. A real pity that, due to geopolitics and regulations, it remains a distant dream for Spanish drivers.
