Peugeot 408 GT: the lion’s total metamorphosis that takes on the SUV crowd

We test the new Peugeot 408 GT and confirm that its generational shift is not an evolution, but a true transformation.

The history of the Peugeot 408 perfectly illustrates how the automotive industry evolves in step with market trends. Originally launched in 2010 as a sedan derivative of the 308 for markets such as China and Argentina, the 408 now returns completely reinvented. The new generation abandons the traditional saloon concept and becomes a coupé-style crossover, built in France and developed on the modern EMP2 platform. The result is a model with far more ambitious positioning within Peugeot’s range.

A radical design shift and renewed ambition

The new 408 GT stands out for its striking design, featuring a raised stance, a sharply sloping rear end and massive 20-inch alloy wheels that emphasise its visual presence. With 184 mm of ground clearance, its crossover intent is clear, while careful aerodynamic development – including specific bumpers, a rear spoiler and elements known as “cat ears” – helps to optimise efficiency. The Matrix LED lighting signature, combined with Peugeot’s trademark front “fangs”, delivers a modern and aggressive identity in line with the brand’s latest design language.

Inside, the familiar i-Cockpit takes centre stage, with its compact steering wheel and elevated digital instrument cluster – a layout that still divides opinion, particularly among taller drivers. Perceived quality is very high, thanks to robust materials, upholstery combining leatherette, fabric and Alcantara, and premium touches such as the panoramic glass roof and ambient lighting. Rear-seat space is adequate for two average-sized adults, although the sloping roofline can be restrictive for taller occupants, while the boot offers 536 litres of capacity, generous on paper but somewhat limited by the tailgate design.

Feline thrust with a comfort-oriented character

Under the bonnet, the Peugeot 408 GT uses the well-known 1.6-litre turbocharged PureTech petrol engine, producing 215 hp and 30.5 kgm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and front-wheel drive. In Sport mode, it reaches a top speed of 206.5 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds, delivering strong performance that prioritises smoothness and comfort over outright sportiness. An average fuel consumption of 12.2 km/l stands out as a key strength, while the dynamic behaviour favours stability and ride comfort, with slightly firm suspension in urban driving and a well-calibrated electric steering system.

On the market, the Peugeot 408 GT is priced at 52,200 dollars, a high figure for a mainstream brand but one that reflects its step up in perceived status. Its closest rival is the DS 4, which shares the same powertrain and overall concept, albeit with a more premium positioning. With an extensive equipment list and a clearly differentiated design, the new 408 GT proves that Peugeot has not simply updated a model: it has completely redefined its role within the segment, focusing on design, technology and a strong identity in an increasingly competitive landscape.
