Nissan Xterra 2028: The Rugged SUV Returns Under $40,000
The iconic Nissan Xterra is making a comeback as an affordable, capable off-roader, ready to compete with the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota 4Runner.

The highly anticipated Nissan Xterra will return to the market after being discontinued in 2015, with the company confirming that the new model will start under $40,000, making it an accessible option in the modern off-road SUV segment. This positions the Xterra as a direct competitor to leading rugged SUVs, combining price, capability, and adventurous spirit.
Design and Color

Beyond pricing, fans are excited about the Xterra’s design and iconic identity, especially its color. Nissan intends for the SUV to feature a bold yellow shade, reminiscent of the original Xterra. While it could borrow Yuzu Yellow from the Nissan Kicks, enthusiasts hope for a unique color that pays homage to the model’s heritage.
Platform and Powertrain
The new Xterra will be built on the Nissan Frontier platform, making it a true body-on-frame off-roader. It will be manufactured alongside the Frontier in Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi plant and is expected to use the Frontier’s 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. A hybrid option may also be offered, while a two-speed transfer case with 4Lo ensures it remains fun, simple, and capable off-road.
Launch Date and Expectations
Although Nissan has not yet announced an official debut, the 2028 Xterra is expected to arrive as a 2028 model year, with sales potentially starting in 2027. Enthusiasm for its return is high, and it promises to be a simple, fun, and highly capable SUV, recapturing the adventurous spirit that made it an off-road icon.
