Nissan Updates the Skyline and Confirms New RWD Infiniti Sedan

By  |

The iconic sports sedan saga continues: the Skyline 400R Limited arrives in Japan as Infiniti prepares its rear-wheel-drive comeback.

The Q50 Farewell and the Skyline’s Continuation

Although Infiniti discontinued the Q50 in North America, the rear-wheel-drive sedan lives on in Japan under the Nissan Skyline name. The Japanese brand recently unveiled the 400R Limited edition, likely as a final tribute to this generation before the confirmed new model arrives later this decade. With only 400 units, this exclusive Skyline combines refined design, carbon-fiber components, and upgraded suspension, preserving the sporty essence that has defined the series.

Performance and Exclusivity of the Skyline 400R Limited

The R400 Limited keeps its 3.0-liter VR30DDTT twin-turbo engine, producing 400 horsepower, paired with 19-inch wheels with Dunlop tires, reinforced front suspension, and a stiffer rear stabilizer bar. Its exclusivity is enhanced with a numbered plaque and carbon-fiber center console, distinguishing it from the standard R400, which is also available in Japan at a lower price point.

The Future of Infiniti’s RWD Sedan

The recent announcement of the new Infiniti RWD sedan confirms that the lineage will continue beyond the Japanese Skyline. According to Tiago Castro, Infiniti Americas’ Vice President, the model is set to launch in 2027 as the spiritual successor to the Q50/Skyline, potentially featuring a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 tuned up to 450 hp, and, notably, it could offer a manual transmission. Its platform will be shared with the Nissan Skyline sold in Japan, maintaining the connection between the two brands.

Infiniti Aims to Reclaim the Sedan Market

After years of declining sales—from a peak of 153,415 units in 2017 to just 58,070 in 2024—Infiniti is looking to revitalize its image with this new RWD sedan. While the sedan segment is no longer dominant, the return of a sporty model could attract loyal customers and restore prestige to the brand in an SUV-focused market.

The Skyline Legacy Continues

With the Skyline 400R Limited marking the farewell to the current generation and the new RWD Infiniti on the horizon, the legacy of Japanese sports sedans remains strong. The combination of exclusivity, performance, and modern design ensures that both Skyline and Infiniti continue to set standards for technology, innovation, and driving excitement in a highly competitive global market.
