New Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 2026: Rugged Design, 163 HP, and a Compact Off-Road Spirit

By  |

The smaller sibling of the Land Cruiser arrives with a tough look, gasoline power, and four-wheel drive. Toyota aims to conquer the 4×4 world once again – but Europe will have to wait.

It’s finally official. After months of speculation, leaks, and digital renders, Toyota has unveiled the new Land Cruiser FJ, a compact off-roader that captures the purest essence of the legendary Japanese SUV. With smaller proportions and a 100% off-road design, it emerges as the most accessible option in the Land Cruiser family.

A True 4×4 with Land Cruiser DNA

The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 2026 measures 4.57 metres long, 1.96 wide, and 1.85 high, with a 2.56-metre wheelbase–almost 30 centimetres shorter than the standard Land Cruiser. Under the bonnet lies a proven 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 163 HP and 246 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed Super ECT automatic gearbox and part-time four-wheel drive. A classic and reliable setup that reinforces its off-road credentials.

For now, Toyota has no plans to launch the FJ in Europe or North America, as confirmed by Masaya Uchiyama, the model’s chief engineer. Still, there’s hope for a future electrified version that could meet stricter market regulations.

Boxy Design and Adventurous Spirit

The FJ stands out for its robust, square bodywork, clearly inspired by the classic Land Cruisers. Up front, round headlights and a horizontal grille pay tribute to the original models, while at the rear it sports an externally mounted spare wheel and modular bumpers, designed to make off-road repairs easier. Toyota also offers extensive customisation options, from snorkels and modular guards to aesthetic packages tailored to each driver. Inside, the cabin follows Toyota’s usual philosophy: durable, functional, and dominated by a large horizontal touchscreen that integrates seamlessly into the rugged dashboard.

A Clear Commitment to Adventure

Beyond this model, Toyota is developing the Land Hopper, an all-electric off-roader designed to go even further than the Land Cruiser itself. Although the company hasn’t confirmed a release date, this future model will expand Toyota’s adventure lineup and mark the next step in the brand’s electrification of off-road vehicles.

The new Land Cruiser FJ will make its public debut at the Japan Mobility Show later this month, ahead of its official Japanese launch in mid-2026. A return to Toyota’s roots with a clear message: adventure never goes out of style.
