New Subaru BRZ Type RA Drops with Racecar Upgrades (Only 300 Units)

By  |

Subaru launches an ultra-limited and radical edition based on the BRZ STI Sport. It incorporates racecar parts and a track-focused setup.

Shortly after announcing the Yellow Edition BRZ, Subaru unveils another limited production special edition: the Type RA. These initials stand for Record Attempt, and the version comes with a healthy catalog of STI components, a more focused suspension setup, and a racing engine. Unfortunately, only 300 buyers in Japan will ever get one.

Racing Heart and Focused Chassis

The inspiration for the new model comes from the Team SDA Engineering BRZ CNF Concept, which runs in the Super Taikyu Series. Consequently, the Type RA incorporates the naturally aspirated FA24 2.4-liter boxer engine. Said engine now carries lighter internals, including connecting rods, pistons, and a crankshaft. In addition, it includes a clutch and flywheel from the racecar.

Although Subaru does not specify whether the output has changed (the standard 232 HP), it claims the revisions create a racecar-like engine feel. Primarily, this is noticeable in the reduced vibration and smoother acceleration.

The chassis upgrades are notable. The Type RA adopts a new set of ZF front and rear dampers. Likewise, it includes an STI rear flexible draw stiffener. Stopping power is improved. In fact, it now features Brembo brakes with ventilated discs and gold calipers.

Exclusivity and High Price

On the exterior, the Type RA wears an STI bodykit. Said kit includes a front splitter, a rear bumper extension, and a performance muffler. Optionally, a carbon fiber rear wing is offered. The car rides on 18-inch BBS alloy wheels in matte gray or matte bronze.

This special edition remains a Japan-only affair. Production is capped at 200 units for the standard model, priced at ¥4,972,000 (approximately $32,100). Furthermore, another 100 units are reserved for the version equipped with the rear wing, priced at ¥5,478,000 (approximately $35,400). Therefore, prospective buyers will need to enter a lottery to secure the chance to purchase one.
