Lexus LFA Returns as Electric Concept: Can the Silent Successor Revive a Legend?

By  |

Lexus unveils a new electric concept that seeks to resurrect the spirit of the iconic LFA, a motorsport cult model. The Japanese house’s project must convince purists by offering a unique driving experience.

The original Lexus LFA became the supercar version of a cult classic film. Some people praised the car, usually those who actually drove it. Many people misunderstood it, basically everyone else. For this reason, the howl of its V10 engine and its carbon-fiber construction were appreciated years later. Toyota only made 500 units. Thus, getting behind the wheel of one was fortunate.

Now, the LFA has returned, perhaps, 15 years later. Lexus unveiled a new LFA concept last night. This new model is fully electric. This new LFA Concept seems as misunderstood as the original. In fact, the V8 Toyota GR GT got more attention. Swapping the V10 for a battery pack borders on sacrilege. The controversy is understandable, even for EV fans.

The Purist Experience the EV Must Recreate

The original LFA was much more Ferrari than Toyota. Its V10 had the most memorable engine howl ever experienced. Furthermore, the interior was heavily unique to that car. The handling was far more aggressive than expected. It also rewarded driver skill. The single-clutch sequential gearbox felt racecar-ready. Therefore, it demonstrated why it crushed a Nürburgring lap record in its day.

An electric supercar faces a challenge. These models do not provide the same experience as gas-powered cars. For example, they lack the engine sound and the feeling of unity with the machine. Above all, they lack exceptional handling unburdened by the heavy battery pack. The electric LFA could achieve something unprecedented in the segment. Toyota could make an EV that enthusiasts actually want.

The Condition for the New Legend’s Success

To achieve this, the manufacturer must introduce novelties. One of them is a transmission we have never experienced before. Another is lighter weight thanks to new kinds of batteries. Additionally, they could offer multiple, selectable simulated engine sounds. This concept will not be what the faithful gearheads want. However, they now have the GR GT for that. The Japanese manufacturer must go for it if the car is good. Lexus must make this machine something truly memorable and unique to drive. Akio Toyoda, a huge car enthusiast, pushed through the original LFA. This was essential to shed the brand’s staid image.
