Lexus 2054 Concept: The Futuristic Car Driven by Tom Cruise
Created in the early 2000s, this futuristic Lexus prototype became a true movie star thanks to Minority Report.
In the realm of sci-fi cars, few have left such an indelible mark as the Lexus 2054 Concept, the spectacular prototype designed to accompany Tom Cruise in Minority Report (2002), the film directed by Steven Spielberg. With its visionary look, imagined technology, and striking presence on screen, it became a symbol of how the automotive industry once envisioned the future—more than twenty years ago.
A prototype born from cinema and imagination
The origin of this concept car is, quite literally, cinematic. Steven Spielberg, a Lexus owner himself, asked the Japanese brand to create a car that would represent mobility in the year 2054. The task was handed to designer Harald Belker and the Calty Design Research centre in California, who together developed a vehicle that blended extreme design with visionary technology.
The result was a two-seater sports car powered by fuel cells, equipped with biometric access systems and autonomous driving capabilities—technologies that, decades later, are now becoming a reality. Its muscular bodywork and aggressive lines broke every design convention, featuring a symmetrical silhouette that made it difficult to distinguish the front from the rear—a deliberate choice to suggest a future beyond traditional design.
A radical design for a dystopian future
The Lexus 2054 was not just a design exercise but a genuine piece of cinematic engineering. Built specifically for Tom Cruise’s action scenes, it featured a functional chassis and a cabin adapted for filming. Its bold, angular aesthetics fit perfectly within Spielberg’s vision of a futuristic, dystopian Washington in 2054. Its popularity extended beyond Minority Report, appearing in other science fiction films such as “The Island” (2005), cementing its reputation as one of the most recognisable concept cars in film history.

From movie set to museum: the life of a star on wheels
Beyond the silver screen, the Lexus 2054 Concept became a powerful marketing tool for the Japanese manufacturer. Lexus invested five million dollars in its partnership with Minority Report, showcasing the car at auto shows and promotional campaigns as a glimpse into the brand’s future vision. During these presentations, it was imagined as capable of detecting passengers’ moods or even selecting their dinner menu. Over time, the 2054 evolved from a movie prop into a collector’s piece. In 2013, one of the original units was auctioned by RM Sotheby’s for around $16,500 (€14,000)—a modest price compared to its iconic status and enduring influence on futuristic car design.
A vision that still feels ahead of its time
Even today, the Lexus 2054 Concept remains a fascinating glimpse into how early 2000s designers envisioned the cars of tomorrow—autonomous, intelligent, and emotionally responsive. While reality hasn’t yet fully caught up, the spirit of that visionary project continues to inspire both automotive innovation and cinematic imagination.
