The Lexus Banned in Spain Is Now More Alluring Than Ever

By  |

It’s not a new generation, but rather a third facelift that breathes fresh life into one of the brand’s most elegant sedans.

When the new Lexus ES debuted a few months ago, many assumed the Japanese brand would finally retire the long-serving IS, a sedan that has been on sale for over a decade. However, against all odds, Lexus has decided to keep the IS alive, even though it remains unavailable in Europe and, of course, in Spain – a fact that continues to frustrate the brand’s most loyal enthusiasts.

A deep facelift for a stylish veteran

The Lexus IS 2026 isn’t a completely new generation, but rather the third major update to the model originally launched in 2013. Its dimensions have only changed slightly – it’s now 4.72 meters long – yet it boasts redesigned bumpers, a new Neutrino Grey paint finish, and 19-inch alloy wheels. There are also red brake calipers featuring the Lexus logo and a restyled rear spoiler, giving the sedan a noticeably sportier and more contemporary look.

Inside, the IS takes a real leap forward in technology and refinement. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sits alongside an equally large touchscreen display, complemented by redesigned climate controls and the removal of the traditional analog clock. The new angular air vents and natural bamboo trims enhance its premium appeal, even if some details, such as the bulky gear selector, subtly remind us of the car’s age.

More technology, comfort, and refinement

The much-criticised touchpad interface is finally gone, replaced by a far more intuitive layout featuring physical buttons for heated and ventilated seats, a traditional volume knob, wireless smartphone charging, and USB-C ports. The door panels have also been redesigned to improve cabin spaciousness and ergonomics. Beyond design, Lexus has fine-tuned the electric power steering and introduced a revised adaptive suspension, aiming to deliver a smoother and more composed ride on uneven roads.

Farewell to the V8, hello to hybrid efficiency

It appears that the spectacular IS500 Ultimate Edition and Climax Edition were the final farewell to the iconic 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8, as the new IS range no longer features that engine. Instead, buyers can choose between the IS 350, powered by a 3.5-liter V6 producing 311 hp, or the IS 300h hybrid, which combines a 2.0-liter petrol engine with electric assistance for a total of 223 hp. Rear-wheel drive remains standard, while the V6 version can also be ordered with all-wheel drive in select markets.

In the United States, pricing for the IS 300 starts at around $41,000 (approximately €36,000), with deliveries expected to begin in early 2026. Though Spain won’t be getting it, the 2026 IS proves that Lexus still knows how to reinvent a classic, blending elegance, performance, and technology in a sedan that has become even more desirable precisely because it’s forbidden fruit.
