JAECOO 5 2025: The Compact SUV That Drives Like a Dream at a City-Car Price

By  |

It arrives with petrol and fully electric versions from the start, and a hybrid option will soon follow.

After the initial surprise caused by the JAECOO 7 and the warm welcome it received from the public, it’s now time for its smaller sibling to take the spotlight — the JAECOO 5, a model that follows in the footsteps of its sister brand Omoda in Spain. The timing chosen by the Chinese manufacturer couldn’t be more strategic: it’s quickly building an appealing product range while using a bold tactic. With 4.38 metres in length and a starting promotional price below €20,000, it’s clear that JAECOO wants to attract customers from the B-SUV segment who are looking for high equipment levels at a reasonable price.

Engines and Technology for Every Driver

On the mechanical front, the JAECOO 5 2025 is available with several powertrains. The petrol version uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 147 hp and 275 Nm of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with front-wheel drive. It reaches 190 km/h and accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 10.2 seconds — not a sports car, but certainly capable for everyday driving. The fully electric version delivers 211 hp and 288 Nm, powered by a 60.9 kWh LFP battery that provides up to 402 km of range (WLTP). It supports 130 kW DC fast charging and V2L power output up to 3.3 kW, ideal for powering small devices outdoors. A hybrid version with 224 hp and 295 Nm will arrive in mid-2025, making the range even more complete and appealing.

On the Road: Comfort and Refinement

During our first test drive of around 200 km, the petrol version stood out for its refinement and comfort. The smaller size and lighter weight compared to the JAECOO 7 make it agile and easy to drive, while the interior remains well-insulated from road noise. The steering is light rather than communicative, but it ensures a pleasant and relaxed experience — perfect for urban and suburban driving. Switching to the electric version, the difference is immediate. Thanks to its lower centre of gravity (battery placement) and the instant torque delivery, it offers a smoother and more stable drive. The absence of engine noise, combined with greater linearity in acceleration, makes this version ideal for city use and relaxed highway cruising. However, despite the images showing it on dirt trails, keep in mind that the JAECOO 5 is not a 4×4, so off-road trips should be limited to light gravel paths or well-maintained tracks.

Equipment and Price: Premium Feel at a Budget Cost

In terms of equipment, the JAECOO 5 2025 impresses. The base Pure trim already includes keyless entry and start, automatic climate control, a 540° HD panoramic camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, and full connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The electric version will also benefit from similar equipment and pricing promotions once the brand finalises agreements with its energy partner.

Prices start at €27,500 for the petrol version and €35,500 for the fully electric one. However, after manufacturer discounts and financing plans, the starting price drops to just €19,990, an exceptionally competitive figure considering its design, equipment, and versatility. With the arrival of the hybrid variant in 2025, the JAECOO 5 could easily become one of the most attractive and balanced SUVs in its class.
