Hyundai Challenges the Toyota Hilux: This is What is Expected from the Future Mid-size Pick-up with a Technological and Electrified Focus

Hyundai prepares to enter the competitive mid-size pick-up segment with its own high-tech proposal. The goal is to surprise with electrification and an extended-range hybrid system that seeks to differentiate itself from historical rivals.

A High-Level Commitment

The mid-size pick-up segment is one of the toughest in the global market. Brands like Hyundai understand that entering late requires innovation. Don Romano, the CEO of Hyundai Australia, confirmed the company’s total commitment to this project. The future double-cab pick-up will not be an experiment, but a firm product with very high standards.

The key to its strategy is differentiating itself from the technical base. Hyundai refuses to replicate what already exists or borrow a chassis from a partner. The development will be 100% proprietary, designed from scratch. This will ensure it meets the highest demands for durability, towing, and payload.

Electrification to Break the Mold

Technological innovation will be the surprise factor of the new model. Hyundai is betting on a high level of electrification to break with the segment’s traditional mold. Among the solutions under evaluation, an extended-range hybrid system stands out. This technical configuration combines a thermal engine with electric propulsion. They are seeking the best efficiency, greater range, and better performance in mixed use.

The model’s launch already has an estimated time window. Plans point to a reveal towards 2027. The pick-up would arrive at dealerships in 2028. The late entry into the segment requires this “shock effect,” using technology as the differential.

Looking Towards Latin America

Although the initial development is focused on Australia, its impact could be global. The eventual arrival in markets like Latin America is not impossible. A new, electrified platform designed for durability could be of great interest to the region. Mid-size pick-ups are undisputed protagonists in those countries.

However, adaptation to the Latin American market could be delayed. Factors like charging infrastructure, production costs, and the need to adapt the product to different uses all play a role. Regardless of whether it arrives or not, this move by Hyundai confirms an unstoppable trend. Pick-ups with hybrid or extended-range systems will also become the new technological frontier in Latin America.
