Formula E Gen4: The Most Powerful and Advanced Electric Race Car Ever, Delivering 800 HP and All-Wheel Drive

The new Formula E single-seater redefines electric performance with more power, efficiency, and road-relevant technology for manufacturers.

Formula E has officially unveiled its new Gen4 car, set to debut in the 2026–27 season with a staggering 600 kW of power — equivalent to over 800 horsepower. This marks a massive improvement over the current Gen3 Evo, which delivers 400 kW (536 hp) with all-wheel drive. The new race car promises even greater performance in full competition mode, reaching 450 kW (603 hp) — a figure that brings it remarkably close to Formula 2 levels of power.

All-Wheel Drive and Smart Aerodynamics: Efficiency Meets Control

One of the Gen4’s standout innovations is its permanent active all-wheel drive, available at all times — a major step forward from the current setup, where it’s limited to specific race phases. The new single-seater also features two aerodynamic configurations: one for high downforce during qualifying and another for low drag during races. This dual setup enhances energy efficiency while maintaining speed, grip, and stability on every circuit.

Sustainability and Unmatched Efficiency

Formula E describes the Gen4 as “the world’s most efficient and sustainable race car”, capable of achieving nearly 100% motor efficiency and regenerating up to 40% of its energy during races. Its construction uses 100% recyclable materials, underlining the championship’s commitment to responsible innovation. Additionally, the active differential system provides superior handling while reinforcing the Gen4’s relevance as a testing ground for future electric mobility technologies.

A New Era for Drivers and Manufacturers

According to Alberto Longo, Formula E’s co-founder and championship director, “the Gen4 is designed for tomorrow’s pioneers.” With 600 kW of power and active all-wheel drive, it will challenge drivers’ skills like never before, promising wheel-to-wheel battles and pure racing action. Meanwhile, Vincent Gaillardot, FIA’s Formula E technical director, emphasized that the Gen4 will be “the fastest, most powerful, and most advanced electric single-seater ever created.”

Innovation Amid Industry Change

Despite these advances, Formula E has seen several manufacturers — including Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and McLaren — exit the series in recent years, reducing the grid to 10 teams. Yet, the arrival of the Gen4 could mark a revival for the championship, combining performance, sustainability, and innovation in equal measure. Set to make its competitive debut in the 2026–27 season, this new electric racer aims to redefine what it means to compete in the era of electrification.
