Ford Reinvents Its Electric Pickup: Farewell to the F-150 Lightning as We Know It

By  |

The Blue Oval brand cancels the current Lightning and commits to a new extended-range electric generation to regain ground in the U.S. market.

Ford is about to make a decisive strategic shift in its electric vehicle lineup. The American manufacturer has decided to end production of the standard F-150 Lightning to make way for a far more ambitious evolution, designed to meet the real demands of U.S. customers and to address sales that have fallen short of initial expectations. Rather than abandoning the concept, Ford is embracing a more pragmatic technical solution.

The new F-150 Lightning EREV will be Ford’s flagship electric pickup, retaining fully electric drive to all four wheels while adding a gasoline engine used solely to generate electricity. This increasingly popular approach in the U.S. preserves the instant torque and acceleration of the current Lightning, but delivers one decisive advantage: dramatically extended driving range.

The change is significant. While today’s Lightning offers around 320 kilometers of range, the upcoming EREV is expected to reach approximately 700 kilometers, effectively eliminating range anxiety and allowing drivers to rely on a conventional fuel station. For many professional users, this configuration strikes the ideal balance between electrification and real-world usability.

Unlimited towing, the key to the new Lightning

Ford acknowledges that towing has been one of the main weaknesses of the original Lightning. With the EREV system, the brand claims that long-distance hauling will be just as straightforward as daily driving. Doug Field, Ford’s Head of EV, Digital and Design, puts it plainly: “Heavy-duty towing and cross-country trips will be as easy as the daily commute.”

In the marketplace, the Lightning EREV will face serious competitors such as the Ram 1500 REV–already rated at 647 hp–and the upcoming Scout Terra. While Ford has yet to release full specifications or official images, everything points to this reinvention of the F-150 Lightning marking a turning point in the electric pickup segment, proving that electrification can be practical, robust, and true to the F-Series spirit.
