Fiat Tipo Bids Farewell: Iconic Compact to Become an SUV in 2026
The Fiat Tipo, one of the Italian brand’s most popular models, will end production in June 2026. Its successor will be a SUV/crossover, keeping pace with global market trends.

Fiat Tipo says goodbye after over a decade of success
The Fiat Tipo, currently sold only as a sedan, will remain on the market until June 2026, with prices starting at €20,100 for the 130 hp diesel engine. Its production at Tofas’ Bursa plant in Turkey will close after more than 700,000 units built over ten years, making the Tipo one of Stellantis’ most profitable compact models. The decision was confirmed by Cengiz Elordu, CEO of Tofas, who noted that production might be extended by just a few months before the final shutdown.
A new Fiat Tipo SUV: the era of crossovers
The Tipo’s successor will not follow the traditional compact, hatchback, or sedan formats. According to Elordu, the next model will be a SUV/crossover, reflecting the growing consumer preference for taller, more versatile vehicles. While platform and design remain undisclosed, it is expected to sit above the urban Fiat 600 and enter the C-segment, offering more space, advanced technology, and family-friendly practicality.
Strategic partnership with Turkey and Stellantis
The future Tipo SUV also highlights the importance of the Stellantis–Koç Holding partnership. Recent visits by John Elkann and Antonio Filosa to Turkey underscore both companies’ commitment to strengthening Tofas’ joint production and ensuring the new SUV maintains the quality, reliability, and competitiveness that have defined the Tipo throughout its history.
Maintaining the quality-price balance
The new model will continue the formula that made the Fiat Tipo a success: a strong balance between price, features, and performance. While technical details are not yet confirmed, the Tipo SUV is expected to compete with models like the C3 Aircross, Opel Frontera, and similar rivals, offering performance, practicality, and comfort, while preserving Fiat’s signature functional and stylish Italian design.
Fiat’s future: from iconic compact to C-segment SUV
With the Tipo SUV/crossover, Fiat confirms its commitment to market demands and strengthens its position in the C-segment. The compact that served countless families for over ten years will be replaced by a more versatile and technologically advanced vehicle, ready to compete in a segment dominated by SUVs and crossovers, while maintaining Fiat’s tradition of characterful cars with design, practicality, and excellent value for money.
