Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREV): The Alternative That Triumphs in China

By  |

A new and fascinating trend is emerging: EREVs, purely electric-powered cars with a gasoline range extender, are revolutionizing the market.

EREVs are electric vehicles equipped with a range extender. They feature a range extender, which is a combustion engine. This engine uses fuel to extend the range of a battery electric motor. Essentially, it powers an electric generator that recharges the car’s battery. The vehicle’s propulsion to the wheels is purely electric.

This solution, also commercially known as REEV, turns out to be the opposite of a PHEV. PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) or HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicles) are primarily propelled by combustion engines. These intermediate models have smaller fuel tanks and smaller batteries or electric motors.

China Drives the Success of Extended Range

A new and interesting trend is emerging over the last 12 months. Extended-range electric vehicles, or EREVs, are gaining ground in China. This alternative is becoming prevalent while the global debate focuses on all-electric vehicles or intermediate solutions. This is good for both consumers and authorities.

China is a prime example of this popularity. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), the total number of EREV models has grown significantly. It jumped from only 12 in 2022 to 40 in the first half of this year. Pioneers of this technology include Li Auto, the now-discontinued BMW i3, the Chevrolet Volt, and the Fisker Karma.

Rapid Spread and the Global Future of EREV

CAAM data shows remarkable growth in China. The EREV market share in China increased from 1.2% in 2022 to 2.9% the following year. It reached 5.0% in 2024, with 4.9% in the first six months. The rapid spread of the EREV indicates it is the latest bet by Chinese manufacturers.

Although these vehicles are hard to see outside the Asian market, the scenario will change. Overseas markets should expect the arrival of this powertrain very soon. This technology is ideal for those seeking to avoid charging problems. It is also a solution for those who suffer from battery range anxiety.

Viable Solution Against Range Anxiety

HEVs are confirmed as a viable intermediate solution. This solution is a midpoint between combustion cars and fully electric ones. The expansion of the EREV is likely, especially considering deficiencies in charging infrastructure. This is true in both developed and emerging markets.

The arrival of this powertrain is expected in countries where Chinese-made BEVs are subject to high tariffs. The growth of Chinese PHEV and HEV sales in Europe is a direct consequence of these tariffs. EREVs could represent a major breakthrough in the rest of the world.
