Changan Deepal S07 2025: The Chinese SUV Aiming to Dethrone Tesla — Real Threat or Just an Illusion?

The historic Asian manufacturer enters Europe with an ambitious electric SUV directly targeting the Tesla Model Y.

A new contender in the global electric market

The Changan Deepal S07 arrives as the latest Chinese offensive in the electric SUV segment, a 4.75-metre model created with a clear mission: to challenge heavyweights like the Tesla Model Y, Skoda Enyaq and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Equipped with a 75 kWh NMC battery and an official range of 474 km, the S07 brings solid arguments to the table, although it falls short in key metrics compared with Tesla. Its modest 93 kW fast-charging capability also places it a step behind its most direct rivals.

Notable technology, but dynamic performance still needs work

Its rear electric motor delivers 215 hp, enough to move its 2,075 kg with ease, achieving 0–100 km/h in 7.9 seconds–perfectly adequate for everyday driving. However, the S07’s weak point becomes evident on the road: despite claiming European tuning, the passive suspension and 20-inch wheels result in a firm, jittery and uncomfortable ride over uneven surfaces. Body roll in tighter corners also reduces confidence, although the steering is precise and predictable, which helps in urban driving and daily use.

A high-tech and surprisingly premium interior

One area where the Changan Deepal S07 truly stands out is inside. Perceived quality is high, with refined materials and a modern atmosphere that impresses for its price bracket. The minimalist design eliminates all physical buttons and replaces the traditional instrument cluster with a head-up display projection–eye-catching but controversial from a practical standpoint. Rear space is excellent, offering passengers their own climate controls, panoramic roof controls and plenty of comfort features.

Generous equipment, but a boot that falls short

The S07 comes loaded with technology: a panoramic roof as standard, 15.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, semi-autonomous driving, and dedicated modes such as Dog Mode and Camping Mode. Even so, it’s not flawless: its 445-litre boot places it below many competitors, and the absence of features like sliding seats, a seven-seat option or a more versatile rear bench limits everyday practicality.

Conclusion: a convincing debut, but still far from challenging Tesla

The Changan Deepal S07 enters Europe as a competitive electric SUV, offering an impressive interior, abundant equipment and a market-shaking price. However, its dynamic shortcomings, lower range and slow charging speeds mean that, for now, Tesla still plays in a different league. Changan has taken an important first step, but it will need to refine its formula if it truly wants to stand toe-to-toe with the segment’s benchmarks.
