Franco Colapinto admitted his emotions after Monza came from the frustration of losing a rare chance to fight with Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari, while he arrives in Madrid excited for the new Madring circuit.
Three days after his emotional finish in Monza, Franco Colapinto has explained why he was left in tears after climbing out of his Alpine.
The Argentine finished ninth and scored points, but the result could have been much bigger after he briefly found himself running third and fighting directly with the leading teams.
“It Came From Within”
Colapinto admitted the emotions were impossible to hide.
He said the disappointment came from knowing he had missed a rare opportunity to fight at the front of the Formula 1 field.
Franco Colapinto was visibly emotional after the Italian Grand Prix despite finishing ninth and scoring points.
The Alpine driver said it was particularly painful because he had never previously been in a position to fight for a podium against teams such as Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari.
After an error at Lesmo following a restart, Colapinto went through the gravel and saw his opportunity disappear.
He acknowledged that the feeling was different from simply losing a ninth-place finish.
Monza Showed What Could Have Been
Colapinto said the final result was almost secondary compared with the experience of competing directly with the leading cars.
The Alpine driver felt strong while fighting at the front and admitted that throwing away such an opportunity so quickly naturally brought frustration and anger.
Colapinto briefly ran inside the top three at Monza before an error ended his fight at the front.
Despite that disappointment, he insists more opportunities will come.
Now, his attention has shifted to Madrid and the first Formula 1 race at Madring.
Madrid Is Special to Colapinto
Colapinto has a strong connection with the Spanish capital.
He lived in Madrid during his early European racing career and competed in Spanish Formula 4.

Madring Is Already Testing the Drivers
The new circuit features 22 corners, including the heavily banked Monumental section.
Colapinto says the track is extremely difficult to master, even in the simulator.
He revealed that it took him hours to put together a perfect lap virtually because the circuit combines slow corners, fast sections, kerbs, and banked turns.

The biggest problem for Sainz is that his Williams is unlikely to give him the performance needed to fight for a victory at home.
The team is currently struggling near the lower end of the standings and is preparing a major upgrade package for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Sainz says simply scoring points in Madrid will already be difficult, but his ambitions are focused much further ahead.

Ferrari has confirmed that the upgraded ADUO2 power unit introduced at Monza survived the Monegasque driver’s heavy crash, although the transmission must be replaced.
Ferrari’s ADUO2 Engine Survived
Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari at the Parabolica during the second lap of the Italian Grand Prix after the car bounced over a drain.
The Ferrari hit the barriers at more than 230 km/h, with the impact generating more than 50G of deceleration.
Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari survived the heavy Monza impact, allowing the upgraded ADUO2 engine to be retained.
Ferrari carried out extensive checks at its Gestione Sportiva facility and determined that the engine had not suffered significant damage.
The SF-26 has therefore been cleared to travel to Madrid.
The Gearbox Must Be Replaced
The transmission was not as fortunate.
The impact caused enough twisting force to damage the gearbox casing, meaning Ferrari will replace it before the next race.
Ferrari will replace Leclerc’s gearbox after the impact at Monza, although the engine remains usable.
The team does not expect the gearbox replacement to trigger a grid penalty.
That allows Leclerc to arrive in Madrid without an additional sporting disadvantage.
Ferrari Must Recover After Monza
The bigger concern for Ferrari is its current competitive and internal situation.
The Italian Grand Prix exposed several weaknesses for the Scuderia, while Leclerc and teammate Lewis Hamilton also found themselves at the center of a tense situation.
