BYD Atto 2 DM-i: The Urban Plug-in Hybrid SUV That Promises 1,000 Km of Range and Zero Emissions Label

By  |

The model combines up to 212 HP of power with two battery options offering up to 90 km of electric range and a combined consumption of just 1.8 L/100 km.

BYD will close 2025 with the arrival of the DM-i (Plug-in Hybrid) versions to the Atto 2 range. These are, without a doubt, the most interesting variants of the Oriental urban crossover model. The vehicle strengthens its arguments with two power levels, two battery capacities, and robust standard equipment. Furthermore, it announces up to 1,000 km of combined range.

This makes the BYD Atto 2 DM-i an ideal vehicle for daily commuting in and around the city. Likewise, it is also suitable for weekend getaways, as it offers the trunk capacity and interior space of a current mid-size compact car.

Exterior Design and Practical Capacity

The appearance of the Atto 2 DM-i barely differs from the rest of the range versions. Its silhouette still resembles an urban SUV, with crossover touches. It condenses everything necessary to solve daily mobility needs in just 4.33 meters in length. It measures 1.83 meters wide and 1.67 meters high.

The aesthetic novelties are found in the redesigned grille. Also observed are a more rounded front bumper and integrated Full LED main lights. The side view is similar to what is already known. At the rear, the integrated roof spoiler and the light strip connecting the taillights reinforce the vehicle’s width. The alloy wheels can be 16 or 17 inches. Furthermore, the 425-liter trunk and five comfortable seats reinforce its practical side.

Hybrid Powertrain and Zero Emissions Label

The Atto 2 DM-i 2025 is based on a known technical scheme. It uses a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, which develops 98 HP and 122 Nm of torque. This engine ensures energy efficiency of 43%. Alongside it, an electric motor works, reaching 197 HP. The battery that powers the hybrid system has two capacities, depending on the chosen version: 7.8 kWh or 18 kWh. In this way, the combined power is 166 HP or 212 HP, respectively.

Both versions have the DGT’s Zero Emissions (0) label. The range in 100% electric mode varies between 40 and 90 km. The version with the smaller battery charges at 3.3 kW in alternating current. On the other hand, the most powerful charges at 6.6 kW, completing the recharge in about 2.7 to 3 hours. The most powerful variant also includes a V2L system for recharging external electrical devices. The 212 HP variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. Officially, the average consumption is 1.8 liters per 100 km with a full battery.

First Driving Impressions and Operating Modes

The first driving impressions confirm the Atto 2’s dynamic qualities in the urban environment. The 90 kilometers in EV mode promised by the top version might fall short only if driving exclusively in the city, which is good news. However, with more combined use, that figure may be an aspiration. Cabin soundproofing is reasonable. The steering feel is slightly over-assisted, which is useful in the city.

The brake pedal needs readjustment, as its initial travel lacks the bite of a 100% thermal vehicle. The driver can choose between HEV hybrid mode, which automatically combines both motors, or EV mode, which prioritizes 100% electric driving. Different driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow) are included, along with two regeneration programs.

Equipment and Electric Comfort Version

BYD simplifies customer choice by offering two trims: Active for the less powerful version and Boost for the 212 HP Atto 2 DM-i. The standard equipment of the entry-level version is generous. It includes LED main lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, 8.8-inch digital instrumentation, a multimedia system with a 10.1-inch screen, automatic climate control, plus an ‘arsenal’ of ADAS. The Boost trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, vegan leather upholstery, and a 12.8-inch multimedia screen.

Additionally, BYD introduces the Comfort version for the 100% electric Atto 2 offering. This version has an output of 204 HP and debuts a 64.8 kWh Blade Battery. This increases its range to 430 km (WLTP), reaching up to 600 km in purely urban use, according to the manufacturer. The price of the Comfort version starts at 36,200 euros before incentives, which can be reduced to 20,990 euros.
