An Icon Born to Race

The 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL Werks represents the first car built by the newly established BMW Motorsport division, led by the legendary Bob Lutz. Only 21 CSL Werks units were produced, 11 of which raced with the factory team, and this model, known as the E9/R1, also played a key role in developing the iconic Batmobile Aero kit. Its racing history includes participation in the 1974 IMSA championship, cementing its sporting legacy from the start.

A Legacy Preserved Over Time

After passing through a U.S. racing team and a private BMW collection in the 1980s, the E9/R1 was acquired by its current private owner in the mid-1990s. Since then, the car has undergone extensive restoration focused on preserving originality, an extremely rare achievement for a development vehicle from this era, with all original parts maintained.

Historic Appearances and Showcases

Although the car spent most of its three decades in storage, it has made memorable appearances, such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb in 2021 and the Salon Privé Concours D’Elegance in 2025, equipped with the iconic Batmobile Aero kit, highlighting its legacy as one of the most significant models in BMW M history.

Power and Exclusive Engineering

This BMW 3.0 CSL development car is powered by a 3.5-liter inline-six engine, producing over 400 hp, staying true to the brand’s racing spirit. The modern homage edition of the CSL featured a 560 hp engine with an exclusive body, further cementing the legend of these sports cars.

A Piece of History Within Reach

The car is now available for sale, although the price is disclosed only upon request, underscoring its status as a collector’s item. Owning this BMW 3.0 CSL means acquiring a symbol of BMW M’s innovation, racing heritage, and history, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for classic car enthusiasts and collectors alike.
