Verstappen Frustrated After Qualifying: “Something Went Wrong Again”
Max Verstappen will start fifth at Monza after Oscar Piastri’s penalty, but another technical issue prevented the Red Bull driver from fighting for a better Q3 result.
Max Verstappen secured fifth on the Monza grid after Oscar Piastri’s penalty, but the Red Bull driver was left frustrated after another technical problem disrupted his qualifying.
Verstappen entered Q3 with a realistic chance of challenging for a stronger position. However, an unusual behavior from the RB22 in low-speed sections prevented him from extracting its full potential.
Red Bull’s Bouncing Problem Returned
Verstappen said something went wrong with the car as soon as qualifying began.
The problem became particularly noticeable over bumps and kerbs, where the Red Bull began bouncing more heavily than expected.

Max Verstappen struggled with excessive bouncing from his Red Bull during qualifying at Monza.
According to Verstappen, the issue costs significant lap time in slow corners because the car becomes difficult to control consistently.
He described the sensation as being similar to a car “jumping like a kangaroo” when the ride height cannot be controlled properly.
Verstappen Had Felt Much Better in FP3
The situation was particularly disappointing because Red Bull had made what Verstappen considered a major improvement before qualifying.
The RB22 felt much more competitive during FP3 and appeared to be in a better performance window than it had been on Friday.

Verstappen believed Red Bull had made a significant step forward in FP3 before the qualifying issue returned.
That progress disappeared when the technical problem emerged.
The loss of consistency over bumps and kerbs made it difficult for Verstappen to attack the corners with confidence, ultimately limiting his qualifying performance.
Red Bull Must Fix the Car Before Sunday
The problem could become even more important during the race.
Monza requires strong stability under braking and good traction when accelerating out of the slower corners, precisely the areas where Verstappen says the car is currently struggling.

Red Bull now faces the task of fixing the issue before Verstappen’s race from fifth on Sunday.
Verstappen made it clear that Red Bull needs to identify and replace the problematic component before the Grand Prix.
The four-time world champion believes continuing with the issue would make the race extremely difficult.
For Max Verstappen Monza, qualifying fifth is not necessarily a disastrous result, but the unresolved technical problem leaves Red Bull with an urgent challenge before Sunday’s race.

Antonelli Sacrificed His Q3 for Russell at Monza
Andrea Kimi Antonelli gave up his own qualifying opportunity to provide slipstream assistance to George Russell, who was fighting for pole position at Monza.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli had an unusual role in Monza qualifying.
Because he will start from the back of the grid after his engine penalty, Mercedes decided to use his Q3 runs primarily to help George Russell fight for pole position.
Antonelli Became Russell’s Slipstream Partner
Instead of maximizing his own qualifying position, Antonelli focused on giving Russell a tow during the crucial laps.
The Italian admitted the situation felt very unusual.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli focused on helping George Russell with slipstream during Q3 at Monza.
Antonelli said he approached Q3 differently because he had little to gain personally.
He also carried more fuel than usual and avoided taking unnecessary risks that could have compromised Mercedes’ planned strategy.
The final run was again designed around providing Russell with a slipstream.
Mercedes Has an Internal Agreement
The strategy was not one-sided.
Russell had previously helped Antonelli at Zandvoort, and the Italian now returned the favor at Monza.

Antonelli returned the favor after Russell helped him during the previous race weekend.
Mercedes has established an understanding between its two drivers for situations involving grid penalties.
Antonelli said that when Russell eventually finds himself in a similar position, the team will apply the same principle in reverse.
“I Had Nothing to Gain”
Antonelli has no regrets about sacrificing his own qualifying opportunity.
He believes the team strategy was straightforward given the circumstances.

Antonelli says the decision was simple because Russell was fighting for pole while he would start from the back.
The Mercedes driver summarized his reasoning clearly: he had nothing to gain, while Russell was fighting for pole.
The arrangement also highlights the level of cooperation Mercedes expects from its drivers when one of them is compromised by a grid penalty.

Hamilton Slams His Q3: “I Was Completely Isolated”
Lewis Hamilton was disappointed with his final qualifying session at Monza, saying poor execution and a lack of a slipstream prevented Ferrari from extracting the SF-26’s full potential.
Lewis Hamilton will start the Italian Grand Prix from fourth place, but the Ferrari driver believes the result could have been much better.
After performing strongly in practice and Q1 and Q2, Hamilton struggled in the decisive Q3 session at Monza.
Hamilton Lost the Rhythm in Q3
Hamilton said the Ferrari had felt competitive throughout the earlier sessions.
The problems began when Ferrari spent a long period waiting in the pit lane before its first qualifying attempt.

Lewis Hamilton will start the Italian Grand Prix from fourth after a frustrating Q3 session.
Hamilton said he was unsure whether tire pressure, temperature, or another factor caused the initial loss of performance.
The bigger problem came in Q3.
He found himself completely isolated, without another car nearby to provide a tow.
No Slipstream Hurt Ferrari
At Monza, the slipstream can provide a significant advantage on the long straights.
Hamilton explained that following another car can change corner-entry speeds and braking references, making it an important part of qualifying execution.

Hamilton said being isolated from other cars prevented him from taking advantage of the slipstream at Monza.
He admitted that he lost his rhythm during the first Q3 attempt.
The second run was better, but the lack of familiar reference points meant Ferrari still could not extract the maximum from the car.
Mercedes Power Still Has the Advantage
Ferrari’s updated power unit has provided a step forward thanks to the latest ADUO development.
However, Hamilton says cars equipped with Mercedes power units still have an advantage on Monza’s straights.

Hamilton believes Mercedes-powered rivals still gain several tenths on Ferrari in Monza’s long straight sections.
Despite starting behind the Mercedes-powered front-runners, Hamilton praised Ferrari’s development effort and the factory team for bringing an update to Monza.
He believes Ferrari can be even more competitive at circuits where outright engine performance plays a smaller role.
For Lewis Hamilton Monza, fourth on the grid is therefore a mixed result. Ferrari has made progress, but poor Q3 execution and the continued Mercedes advantage on the straights prevented Hamilton from fighting for the front row.
