Audi Concept C: From the Museum to the Street

Few concept cars are ever seen driving legally on public roads. The Audi Concept C, which debuted at the IAA Mobility Show, is not a static prototype: it has been registered and equipped with turn signals, windshield wipers, and a horn, meeting all traffic regulations. This high-performance coupe features a rear-mounted electric motor capable of reaching roughly 90 mph, a surprising figure for what many assumed would be a display-only vehicle.

Technology and Volkswagen Group Connections

Although its official launch is still a few years away in 2027, the Concept C is based on a platform shared within the Volkswagen Group, suggesting links to the upcoming Porsche Boxster and Cayman electric models. The production version will include a dual-motor Quattro variant, delivering higher power and performance, while its mid-mounted battery pack behind the driver ensures optimal weight distribution and handling.

Design Close to the Final Model

The Concept C reflects approximately 87% of the final production design, according to Audi’s creative director, Massimo Frascella. For the first time, the model will feature an electrically retractable hardtop as the only body style, eliminating a fixed-roof coupe option. Its suspension has been specially developed for this model, rather than using parts from the TT or R8, highlighting Audi’s commitment to innovative driving dynamics and comfort.

Performance, Weight, and Historical Comparison

Weighing 1,690 kg (3,725 lbs), similar to the rear-wheel-drive R8 V10 Spyder, the Concept C combines electric performance with cutting-edge engineering. Audi showcased it alongside first-generation TT and R8 models, a C6 RS6, and the legendary 1936 Auto Union Type C, highlighting the evolution from supercharged V16 engines to high-performance electrification.

Audi’s Future Electric Sports Car

CEO Gernot Döllner anticipates annual sales in the low five-digit range, confident that the Concept C will remain profitable. While Porsche will continue producing combustion engines for its models, Audi’s new sports car will be 100% electric, marking a milestone in the brand’s mobility strategy. This release signals a future where performance, design, and sustainability converge in a single vehicle.
