2027 Volkswagen ID.3 GTI Is the Most Powerful GTI Yet

Volkswagen is turning its electric ID.3 into a true GTI for 2027. The new ID.3 GTI delivers 322 horsepower, rear-wheel drive and up to 373 miles of WLTP range.

The new model also introduces another major change. Instead of front-wheel drive, the ID.3 GTI sends its power to the rear wheels through the MEB platform’s rear-mounted electric motor.

That makes it a very different kind of GTI while keeping the compact dimensions and everyday usability expected from the ID.3.

The Most Powerful GTI in Volkswagen’s Lineup

The ID.3 GTI produces 322 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque. That is enough to edge past the 321-hp output of the Golf GTI Edition 50.

Despite having more power than any previous GTI, the ID.3 does not improve its acceleration figures compared with the GTX it replaces. Volkswagen quotes 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 124 mph.

The 2027 Volkswagen ID.3 GTI becomes the most powerful GTI ever built with 322 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque.

The performance figures may look familiar, but the driving layout is anything but conventional for a GTI.

The rear-mounted electric motor means the ID.3 GTI is the first rear-wheel-drive GTI, while the smaller ID. Polo GTI uses a front-wheel-drive MEB+ configuration.

The ID.3 GTI Has 373 Miles of Range

Volkswagen has also given the performance hatch a relatively large 79-kWh usable battery.

The company estimates up to 373 miles of WLTP range, an improvement of approximately six miles over the outgoing ID.3 GTX.

Charging is also reasonably quick. The battery can accept up to 183 kW of DC power, allowing a 10-to-80-percent charge in around 29 minutes.

The ID.3 GTI combines its 322-hp rear-wheel-drive powertrain with a 79-kWh battery and an estimated 373 miles of WLTP range.

The efficiency story is important because Volkswagen is positioning the car as an everyday electric hot hatch rather than a range-limited performance special.

The larger battery therefore gives the GTI enough range to work as a practical daily driver while still offering serious acceleration.

Volkswagen Gives the ID.3 a More Aggressive Look

The GTI treatment builds on the recently updated ID.3 Neo. The front end receives more aggressive styling, red detailing and glossy black elements that distinguish it from the standard model.

Vertical LED daytime running lights are another GTI-specific touch.

Along the side, the previous GTX badge has been replaced by a GTI emblem on the front doors. New 20-inch wheels are fitted with 225-section tires, while wider 235 tires are available as an option.

The ID.3 GTI interior adds physical controls, larger displays, sport seats and red GTI-specific details.

The rear also gets a new GTI badge on the body-colored tailgate. The roof now matches the body color as well, replacing the darker treatment used previously.

The Interior Finally Adds More Physical Controls

Volkswagen has also addressed some of the criticisms aimed at earlier ID models.

The ID.3 GTI features more conventional controls, including physical steering-wheel buttons, a dedicated volume knob and separate switches for the rear windows.

The driver now gets a larger 10.25-inch digital instrument display, while the infotainment screen measures 12.9 inches.

The touch-sensitive slider underneath the center screen has also been removed, replaced by a row of conventional controls on the center console.

Inside, the GTI receives heavily bolstered front seats and additional red accents.

A GTI Mode Adds Launch Control

Volkswagen is giving the electric hot hatch a dedicated GTI driving mode designed to maximize its performance characteristics.

The mode activates launch control and adjusts the vehicle’s systems for more aggressive driving. It also adds a synthetic engine sound intended to reproduce some of the character associated with the gasoline-powered Golf GTI.

That feature is clearly artificial, but Volkswagen is using it to preserve some of the emotional elements traditionally associated with the GTI badge.

Volkswagen ID.3 GTI Arrives in Europe in 2027

The Volkswagen ID.3 GTI represents a major shift for the GTI formula. It combines the badge’s performance mission with an electric powertrain, rear-wheel drive and a battery large enough to provide substantial everyday range.

At the same time, Volkswagen has retained several familiar GTI elements, including aggressive styling, sport seats, red detailing and a dedicated performance mode.

The ID.3 GTI will go on sale in Europe in spring 2027. It therefore marks a new chapter for the GTI name, with Volkswagen moving the iconic badge further into its electric lineup without abandoning the performance-focused identity that made it famous.
