2025 WRX-Swapped Crosstrek: the modern hatchback Subaru fans always wanted
An enthusiast transforms his Subaru Crosstrek into a true WRX hatchback, creating the car that never came to the U.S.

Subaru still refuses to build another WRX hatchback for the U.S. market, leaving many fans frustrated. The old five-door disappeared in 2012, and since then, only less exciting sedans have been available. However, Stephen Ketelsen (@vb_hatch) decided to take matters into his own hands, turning his stock Crosstrek into a modern WRX hatchback using parts from a contemporary WRX and the powerful FA24 engine. The result is a hatchback that combines agility, power, and the iconic Subaru sporty spirit.
How the project came to life: from idea to reality
The project began in 2020 when Stephen purchased his stock Crosstrek and realized that the original 150 hp just wasn’t enough. After reaching out to Dan Hurwitz from Mach V Motorsports, they assessed the compatibility of the chassis and subframe between the Crosstrek and WRX. After weeks of planning, Stephen acquired a 2022 WRX Premium with the FA24 engine and six-speed manual transmission, carefully disassembling both cars in his garage and organizing every part for the transformation.
Installation and adjustments: a true WRX in a Crosstrek
The most complex part was installing WRX components into the Crosstrek. The engine, transmission, and WRX rear subframe fit almost perfectly, while Mach V assisted with wiring and minor adjustments. One challenge was the radiator core support and the front fenders, which had to be cut and reassembled to align with the chassis and the WRX front-end lines. Finally, after mechanical and aesthetic adjustments, the project took shape, creating a Crosstrek that now drives and performs like a real WRX.
Performance and the future of the WRX Crosstrek

After the swap, the Crosstrek almost doubled its original horsepower, delivering impressive performance for its size. Stephen notes that although the car currently behaves like a stock WRX, he plans to add additional components and increase power, exploring the full potential of the FA24 engine. The combination of suspension, chassis, and engine makes the vehicle an agile, fun-to-drive hatchback with classic Subaru character.
Conclusion: a fan’s dream realized
The WRX-Swapped Crosstrek proves that passion and engineering can create what manufacturers won’t. With months of work, professional collaboration, and meticulous attention to detail, Stephen has built the modern hatchback Subaru enthusiasts have always wanted, and the project continues to evolve.
