Toyota unveils the new Land Cruiser FJ: the compact SUV set to challenge the Ford Bronco Sport
The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ debuts this week with true off-road spirit, retro styling, and a clear strategy to compete in the midsize SUV segment.

Land Cruiser FJ: a return to Toyota’s adventurous roots
Toyota is preparing a strong entry into the midsize off-road SUV market with the launch of its new Land Cruiser FJ at the Japan Mobility Show. This robust, compact SUV is designed to compete directly with models like the Ford Bronco Sport, offering a genuine 4×4 experience that combines affordability, classic design, and off-road DNA. The brand aims to expand the Land Cruiser family to an audience seeking a pure, reliable, and historically renowned off-roader.
Retro style and dimensions ideal for city and trail
Inspired by the Compact Cruiser EV Concept, the new FJ features a muscular, retro design with boxy lines, wide wheel arches, and rectangular LED headlights, reinforcing its off-road identity. According to leaked specifications, it will measure under 4.5 meters in length with a 2.75-meter wheelbase, offering maneuverability in urban environments without compromising its off-road capabilities.
Global debut and launch strategy
The official debut of the Land Cruiser FJ is scheduled for October 21, with early access for select media on October 20 at the Japan Mobility Show Prologue. The model will then be showcased at Toyota’s main MobiShow stand, alongside other prototypes and future developments. This approach ensures global exposure and positions the SUV as a standout in its category.
Production and market arrival
Initially known as the “Land Cruiser Mini”, the project will be produced in Thailand, with a commercial launch planned in Japan by mid-2026. Toyota aims to strengthen its presence in the growing midsize off-road segment, offering a compact, robust SUV with iconic styling that preserves the heritage and prestige of the Land Cruiser lineage.
A direct rival to the Bronco Sport
With the new Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota reinforces its commitment to the midsize off-road SUV segment. Its adventurous attitude, classic design, and genuine 4×4 capability make it a direct competitor to the Ford Bronco Sport, appealing to off-road enthusiasts seeking heritage, style, and functionality in a single vehicle.
