Toyota Mini Land Cruiser 2025: The Return of the Off-Road Spirit

By  |

The new Mini Land Cruiser could debut on October 20 with a 2.7-liter engine and true 4×4 soul.

Toyota is preparing one of the most anticipated comebacks of the year: the Mini Land Cruiser, also known as the FJ Cruiser, which could make its debut this October 20 at a private event for the specialized press in Japan. According to the Japanese outlet Mag-X, the off-roader will be officially revealed to the public on October 21 at 5:00 AM (local time), moving up the originally planned 2026 launch by almost two years.

A Compact 4×4 with Legendary DNA

Everything suggests that this new model will be built on the IMV-0 platform, the same robust base used by the Hilux Champ in Asian markets. This confirms that, despite its compact size, the Mini Land Cruiser will retain a ladder-frame chassis, ensuring stiffness and genuine off-road capability. Measuring 4.35 meters in length, it will be similar in size to the Toyota Corolla Cross, positioning itself as the spiritual successor to the Suzuki Jimny, a benchmark among small 4x4s.

Under the hood, Toyota is expected to equip the model with a naturally aspirated 2.7-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, the same one found in the Hilux, delivering 165 horsepower. While it’s not a hybrid powertrain, it promises reliability, responsive performance, and excellent off-road behavior, staying true to the Land Cruiser’s heritage.

A Global Model with European Ambitions

If Toyota decides to sell this model beyond Asia, the brand will have to adapt the powertrain to meet European regulations, likely opting for electrified or mild-hybrid versions to comply with strict EU emissions standards. Still, the project’s DNA clearly targets true off-road enthusiasts, those who value robustness and traction over luxury or extreme efficiency.

Should the Mini Land Cruiser not be unveiled on October 20, all eyes will turn to the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, scheduled between October 30 and November 9, where Toyota is expected to showcase this long-awaited creation. According to Japanese sources, the starting price is expected to be around €25,000, although in Europe that figure could easily exceed €30,000 once taxes and additional equipment are factored in.

With this launch, Toyota aims to revive the adventurous spirit of its iconic Land Cruiser lineup, blending the classic appeal of authentic off-roaders with a modern and accessible approach. If confirmed, the Mini Land Cruiser could become one of the most desirable models of 2025, especially among those who still believe that the real thrill of driving begins where the pavement ends.
