The Return of the Toyota Celica: 600 HP, 4×4, and Turbo Engine Coming in 2027
After nearly 20 years, the legendary Celica returns with power, technology, and iconic design.

The Toyota Celica Roars Back
After decades of speculation, the Toyota Celica is finally making a comeback. From Japan, rumors suggest an eighth generation developed by Gazoo Racing, featuring high performance and cutting-edge technology. Sports car enthusiasts and Formula 1 fans alike are already excited about a model that blends tradition with modern innovation, offering a contemporary approach without losing the essence of a classic.
2.0 Turbo Engine with Up to 600 HP
According to Japanese media like Best Car, the new Celica will feature a 2.0-liter turbo G20E engine, delivering 400 HP in its base version and up to 600 HP in the top variant. This powerplant, derived from the GR Yaris M Concept, promises an intense and sporty driving experience. The engine layout is still unconfirmed, but it could adopt a mid-engine configuration, bringing the Celica closer to the philosophy of the legendary MR2, offering exceptional dynamic balance.
All-Wheel Drive and Transmission Options
In addition to the engine, the GR Celica is expected to include GR Four all-wheel drive, like the GR Yaris, ensuring grip and stability in all conditions. Transmission options will include a six-speed manual and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, catering to both driving purists and modern tech enthusiasts.
Prototypes and Possible WRC Return
While no test mules have been spotted on public roads, Toyota has already shown some prototypes to U.S. dealerships. There are even talks of a World Rally Championship (WRC) version, a nod to the Celica’s historic success on rally stages between 1988 and 1995, with multiple constructors’ and drivers’ titles.
Launch Date and Expectations
Japanese media indicate that the GR Celica could debut in 2027, likely at the Tokyo Motor Show. However, new leaks may reveal details in the coming months, heightening anticipation among Toyota fans and car enthusiasts worldwide.
