The New Honda Prelude Takes Japan by Storm: Eight Times More Sales Than Expected
Honda’s reborn hybrid coupé is a surprise hit, especially among middle-aged and older drivers.
The return of the Honda Prelude has stirred far more enthusiasm than expected—at least in its home market. Although younger audiences initially greeted it with scepticism, with some dismissing it as a “soulless Civic Coupé,” the numbers tell a different story. In its first month on sale in Japan, Honda received eight times more orders than its initial sales target, proving that this iconic nameplate still resonates strongly with nostalgic enthusiasts.
Eight Times the Anticipated Success
Honda had set a modest goal of 300 units per month, yet between September 5 and October 6, more than 2,400 orders were placed for the new Prelude. Demand has been so intense that some dealerships temporarily paused new reservations, while Honda is already working to ramp up production and shorten waiting times. It’s a clear sign that the Japanese market still values classic coupés with modern hybrid DNA.
A Favourite Among Mature Drivers
The most interesting fact is who’s actually buying the new Prelude. According to Honda, most customers are between 50 and 60 years old—drivers who dreamed of owning the original Prelude back in the ’80s and ’90s and now seek a comfortable, efficient car with an emotional touch. Colour preferences also reflect this refined taste: white dominates with 63% of orders, followed by grey (16%), black (11%), and red (10%).

In Japan, prices start at 6,179,800 yen (around €35,900), while the two-tone Limited Edition, sold exclusively online for about €36,600, has already sold out within days—another clear indicator that Honda’s hybrid coupé has struck a chord with its audience.
A Different Kind of Sports Car
The 2025 Honda Prelude will reach U.S. dealerships later this autumn and is expected to arrive in Europe in 2026, entering a niche segment of balanced, hybrid sports cars. Rather than competing head-to-head with models like the Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ, or Mazda MX-5 RF, the Prelude aims to offer a more refined, efficient, and comfort-oriented experience—perfect for those who value driving pleasure and elegance over sheer performance. With this strategy, Honda successfully revives an icon for the modern era: a hybrid coupé that blends nostalgia, technology, and comfort. Judging by the early demand, the Prelude is truly back—and it’s here to stay.
