Skoda Brings a Classic Back to Life: The 1000 MBX Returns to the Future with an Electric Soul
The legendary rear-engined coupé of the 1960s is reborn through Skoda’s “Modern Solid” design language — a digital reimagining that blends history, innovation, and nostalgia in perfect harmony.

The Return of a Czech Icon with a Futuristic Spirit
Skoda has surprised the automotive world with a project as unexpected as it is fascinating: an electric reinterpretation of the iconic 1000 MBX, the rare rear-wheel-drive coupé that debuted in 1966. Only 1,403 units were ever produced before its discontinuation in 1969, and the slightly more powerful 1100 MBX was even rarer, with just 1,114 examples built. Today, the Czech brand pays tribute to that automotive jewel by applying its new “Modern Solid” design philosophy, merging clean, angular lines with the soul of the original model.
Classic Design Meets Cutting-Edge Technology
The new Skoda 1000 MBX Concept preserves the boxy silhouette of the original while adding distinctive touches such as rear-hinged doors inspired by the Mazda RX-8 and four sliding doors that provide full cabin access. Inside, designer David Stingl has created an elegant, retro-futuristic interior featuring a glass-covered oval dashboard and cinema-style fold-up seats. The exterior, led by Antti Savio, was completed in just four weeks as part of Skoda’s “Icons Get a Makeover” program, which previously reimagined the legendary 110 R coupé.
An Electric Experiment That Won’t Hit the Showroom
Despite its stunning looks and nostalgic charm, this 1000 MBX will never reach production. Skoda has made it clear that this is purely a creative “what if” exercise, a design exploration unconstrained by engineering limitations. Nevertheless, the digital model features details such as height-adjustable air suspension and proportions similar to the last-generation Audi TT, offering a glimpse of what a Czech coupé might look like in the era of electric mobility.
A Tribute to the Past, a Vision for the Future
This modern reinterpretation of the Skoda 1000 MBX not only celebrates one of the brand’s rarest creations but also hints at the future direction of its electric lineup, including the upcoming Vision O, a large electric wagon slated for production in the coming years. Ultimately, this concept shows that Skoda’s passion for design and automotive heritage remains stronger than ever — even in digital form.
