Nissan Rogue Plug-in Hybrid is Actually a Mitsubishi Outlander
The new Nissan Rogue Plug-in Hybrid coming to the United States is not an original creation by the brand, but the result of “badge engineering” with its alliance partner, Mitsubishi. It is, essentially, the Outlander PHEV in a Nissan disguise.
The new Nissan Rogue Plug-In Hybrid for the American market looks suspiciously familiar to the Mitsubishi Outlander . The familiarity is because it is not an all-new creation . It is an exercise in “badge engineering” . Nissan borrowed the plug-in hybrid SUV from its alliance partner . It gave it a few bespoke design cues to wear the Rogue name “.
The current generation of the Nissan Rogue, known as the X-Trail in other markets, has been around since 2020 . It received a mild facelift in late 2023 . While Nissan is working on an update for the upcoming self-charging hybrid variant, they decided to take a different route for the plug-in hybrid . Instead of transplanting the Outlander PHEV's powertrain into the Rogue, they simply took the entire Mitsubishi vehicle . They only swapped in Nissan’s own grille, badges, and a few surface details “.
Design Details and Specifications
The Rogue PHEV inherits the black accents and 20-inch wheels from the Outlander Black Edition version . It adds body-colored inserts to help it stand apart . Despite these minor changes, the resemblance remains clear “.
The electrified setup carries over unchanged from the pre-facelift Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV . It pairs a **2.4-liter gasoline engine** with two electric motors . It offers standard all-wheel drive . The combined output is **248 hp (185 kW / 251 PS)** . A 20 kWh battery provides up to 38 miles (61 km) of electric-only range . The recently updated Outlander PHEV, however, now makes **302 hp** and uses a larger **22.7 kWh** battery . This suggests Nissan’s version is running slightly behind in the numbers race “.
Interior and Features: Seven-Seater Layout
Inside, the Rogue PHEV features a three-row seven-seater layout . Its digital cockpit includes a **12.3-inch** instrument cluster . The central touchscreen is 9 inches . This size is notably smaller than the **12.3-inch** unit found in the non-electrified Rogue .

The base SL trim includes LED lighting, heated front seats, four USB ports . It also comes with a full suite of driver assistance systems . Moving up to the Platinum trim adds a 10-inch head-up display . It includes leather upholstery, a **nine-speaker** Bose audio system . A panoramic power sunroof, heated rear seats and steering wheel are also added . In addition, it features rear sunshades and **two 120-volt power outlets** . Externally, the changes are limited to gloss black roof rails “.
Availability and Estimated Pricing
The 2026 Nissan Rogue Plug-In Hybrid will make its first public appearance on November 21 at the Los Angeles Auto Show . Pricing details remain under wraps . However, it is safe to assume they won’t stray far from the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV . The latter starts at **$40,445 USD** before destination and taxes . The first examples are expected to arrive at U.S. dealerships in early 2026 “.
