New Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 2025: The Off-Roader Set to Take On the Ford Bronco Sport
Toyota returns to its roots with a compact SUV that blends a retro design, modern technology, and a pure adventurous spirit to redefine the off-road segment.
Toyota is gearing up to shake up the midsize off-road SUV market with the launch of the new Land Cruiser FJ 2025, which will make its world debut at the Japan Mobility Show. This SUV arrives with a clear mission: to challenge the Ford Bronco Sport, one of the segment’s biggest names. With this move, the Japanese brand is expanding its legendary Land Cruiser family, targeting buyers looking for a true 4×4 that’s more affordable but still carries the character and off-road DNA that made the name iconic.
The Heir to the Legendary FJ Cruiser Returns for a New Era
The new Land Cruiser FJ takes direct inspiration from the Compact Cruiser EV Concept, reviving the squared-off, muscular styling that defined the beloved FJ Cruiser. Its retro lines, rectangular LED headlights, and flared wheel arches highlight its rugged personality. According to leaked information, the model will measure under 4.5 metres long with a wheelbase of around 2.75 metres, offering the perfect balance between urban agility and genuine off-road ability.
Initially referred to in rumours as the “Land Cruiser Mini,” the project took final shape after Toyota’s global electrification plan was revealed in 2021. Now officially named FJ, the SUV will be produced initially in Thailand, with sales scheduled to begin in 2026, starting in Japan. Its official unveiling will take place on 21 October, following a private media preview the day before at an event called the Japan Mobility Show Prologue.

From a technical standpoint, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to feature next-generation hybrid powertrains, developed with Toyota’s extensive experience in both motorsport and Formula 1 in terms of thermal efficiency and energy recovery. The goal is to deliver strong performance with reduced emissions, while maintaining the all-wheel-drive capability and durability that define the Land Cruiser heritage.
With this bold new model, Toyota revives the purest essence of the Land Cruiser: a compact, tough, and unmistakably iconic off-roader that pays tribute to the brand’s classics. The new FJ is set to become a global benchmark, taking on the Ford Bronco Sport head-on while ushering in a new chapter for those who crave the traditional 4×4 spirit, now fused with modern Japanese engineering and technology.
