Mazda Vision-X Coupé 2025: The Return of the Rotary Engine in a 510 HP Plug-In Hybrid Masterpiece
Mazda stuns at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show with two futuristic prototypes — the Vision X-Coupé and Vision X-Compact — showcasing the brand’s next step in design evolution and sustainable performance.

The Rotary Revival: Where Technology Meets Passion
The new Mazda Vision-X Coupé marks a major milestone for the brand. This stunning four-door coupé features a plug-in hybrid powertrain built around a twin-rotor rotary engine, delivering an impressive 510 combined horsepower. It can travel 159 km (99 miles) in all-electric mode, and more than 800 km (497 miles) when using its combustion-assisted system. The engine runs on carbon-neutral fuel derived from microalgae, a sustainable innovation proudly developed by Mazda.
A Bold Blend of Art, Emotion, and Sustainability
Mazda explains that as microalgae grow, they absorb CO₂ and store oil within their cells — oil that can then be refined into carbon-neutral fuel. The by-products of this process can also be used in food production or as organic fertilizer, reinforcing Mazda’s commitment to environmental responsibility. It’s a truly revolutionary approach that unites performance, innovation, and eco-consciousness in one breathtaking package.
Vision X-Compact: The Smart Car That Feels Your Emotions
Alongside the coupé, Mazda unveiled the Vision X-Compact, a hatchback reminiscent of the Mazda2 but infused with advanced emotional intelligence. This futuristic concept can read the driver’s mood and suggest personalized actions — like taking a scenic route instead of the motorway or warning of hidden hazards. It’s a driving companion that connects emotion and technology, redefining the relationship between car and driver.
Evolved KODO Design and Clean Minimalism
The Vision-X Coupé stands out in its elegant silver finish, featuring an evolved version of Mazda’s KODO design language, with LED lighting that extends from the lower grille to the headlights. Inside, the cabin blends white seats, green and brown materials, and a panoramic integrated display. The Vision X-Compact takes a minimalist approach, offering a three-spoke steering wheel, a large analog speedometer, and even a smartphone mount instead of a central screen — proof that simplicity can coexist with sophistication.
Mazda’s Vision for a New Era
Together, the Vision X-Coupé and Vision X-Compact preview Mazda’s next generation of vehicles, where the rotary engine returns as a modern icon, now reimagined for the age of electrification and sustainability. With these prototypes, Mazda shows that heritage and innovation can move forward together, keeping the pure joy of driving alive in a new hybrid era.
