Hyundai Crater: The Electric 4×4 Concept That Threatens the Off-Road Segment and Anticipates the Future XRT Range

By  |

Hyundai has unveiled the Crater prototype, an impressive concept that aims directly at off-road rivals like the Jeep Recon.

Hyundai has shown the Crater prototype. This concept anticipates what a future production 4×4 might look like. The brand seeks to enter the off-road vehicle segment. In fact, it already offers XRT variants with an adventurous line in models like the IONIQ 5.

The impressive concept comes with enormous 33-inch off-road tires. In addition, it is equipped with skid plates, tow hooks, and auxiliary lights. The design does not forget the digital pixel headlights, characteristic of the IONIQ range. Designers included certain hidden details. For example, the anodized rescue hooks feature a small figure. This has been named “Crater Man.” The character is the concept’s logo and appears throughout the vehicle.

Surprising Interior with Unique Elements

The Crater’s interior is surprising. Instead of a traditional dashboard, it has a cylindrical structure. This seems suspended by two straps. Four small square screens are removable. They display widgets like Spotify. Furthermore, they can be taken out of the car. These screens are surrounded by dials. Along with this, the vehicle includes an almost rectangular steering wheel and a warm oxide orange tone.

Unfortunately, Hyundai did not share technical data for the Crater. It is only known to be electric. Most likely, it uses the brand’s 84 kWh battery. It could also use the dual-motor setup with 325 HP from the IONIQ 5. However, this is only an assumption.

Real Off-Road Capabilities and Future Projection

The Crater appears to have genuine off-road qualities. This goes beyond its high ground clearance and all-terrain tires. The interior includes controls. These are used to engage locking differentials and a kind of low-range gear.

Hyundai does not plan to bring the Crater to market. It will not be a direct rival to the Jeep Wrangler or the Ford Bronco. Instead, the prototype anticipates the direction of future XRT variants. Currently, vehicles like the IONIQ 5 and the Palisade XRT are better suited for simple trails.
