Honda Odyssey Type R: The Minivan Every Dad Dreams Of

By  |

A one-off manual Honda Odyssey Type R steals the spotlight at SEMA, proving family cars can be thrilling.

When the words Odyssey and Type R appear together, few expect reality–but this one is real. Built by Bisimoto and Jordan Distributors, the minivan is not an official Honda project, yet it looks like something straight from Honda’s engineering department. Glossy black trim, front splitter, side skirts, and a rear diffuser give the Odyssey a more aggressive yet polished stance.

Performance-inspired exterior details

Subtle yet purposeful styling cues distinguish this Odyssey. Three exhaust pipes protrude from the rear diffuser, while Red Honda emblems and Type R badges mark its unique identity. Sitting on 19-inch black alloy wheels from the Civic Type R with adjustable coilovers, the minivan achieves a lowered, track-ready stance that hints at its true potential without sacrificing practicality.

Turbocharged power under the hood

The heart of the build is a 2.0-liter turbocharged K20C four-cylinder from the Civic Type R, replacing the standard V6. Extensive tuning lifts output from 315 hp to 550 hp, transforming the minivan into a surprisingly ferocious hot hatch on wheels. It’s a clear demonstration of what skillful builders can achieve beyond the constraints of production models.

Manual transmission brings driving engagement

Unlike the standard V6 Odyssey, which only comes with an automatic gearbox, this Type R conversion introduces a genuine manual transmission. A leather-wrapped shifter and three aluminum pedals restore full driver control, offering a rare combination of practicality and pure driving fun. The rest of the cabin retains the three rows of seats and sliding doors that make the Odyssey an ideal family hauler.

A one-off experiment with lasting impact

As with most SEMA showcars, the Odyssey Type R is a unique creation, but it proves that even a minivan can embody the spirit of a hot hatch. For enthusiasts, it demonstrates that performance, excitement, and everyday usability can coexist, inspiring a new vision for family-oriented vehicles.
