First Look at the Electric Subaru STI and Its Gasoline Sibling Ahead of Japan Mobility Show 2025

By  |

Subaru unveils its next STI models, including the Performance-E electric fastback and the Performance-B gasoline STI, blending advanced technology, sporty design, and high-performance heritage.

Subaru STI 2025: Electric and Gasoline, Together in Japan

With the 2025 Japan Mobility Show approaching, Subaru has released the first images of two STI prototypes, giving a glimpse into the future of its performance division. The Performance-E electric STI features a fastback silhouette, with slimmer headlights, a narrower hood, and a sharp front bumper, while the gold aerodynamically covered wheels emphasize its futuristic design. Meanwhile, the Performance-B gasoline STI resembles a GR Corolla with a larger rear spoiler and pronounced wheel arches, demonstrating Subaru’s commitment to its traditional high-performance heritage.

Design and Details That Stand Out

Both prototypes feature red accents and the iconic Subaru Tecnica International branding, highlighting the brand’s performance legacy. The Performance-E emphasizes aerodynamic, modern lines, while the Performance-B retains the aggressive style typical of gasoline STIs, with a WRX-inspired front end and side hood vents. Every line and detail reflects Subaru’s sporty philosophy, bridging electrification and internal combustion.

Powertrains and All-Wheel Drive

The gasoline STI retains Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, while details about the Performance-E electric’s power, transmission, or range remain undisclosed. This approach is notable, as Subaru previously announced that the STI badge would be reserved for electric models in the future, creating an interesting mix of tradition and innovation.

STI Legacy and Special Editions

Subaru has adapted to stricter emission regulations, which led to the pause of the WRX STI globally. However, the S210 special edition with a 2.4-liter turbo 300 hp engine proved that high-performance models remain alive in Japan, combining a CVT automatic transmission and exclusive collector features. This legacy is echoed in the new concept cars, which aim to maintain STI essence while exploring electrification.

Expectations and Future Production

Both prototypes will officially debut on October 29 in Japan, alongside models like the Trailseeker, Forester Wilderness, and Outback Wilderness. While it is still unclear if either model will reach production, Subaru makes it clear that the STI division will continue evolving, combining electrification, futuristic design, and the spirit of its most iconic sports cars.
