First Drive of the 2026 Toyota GR Corolla: The Sporty Hatch Evolves
Toyota refines its sporty hatchback with chassis upgrades, more power, and thrilling performance on both track and gravel for 2026.
The 2026 Toyota GR Corolla represents the next evolution in Toyota’s high-performance sports car strategy in the U.S. Powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 300 hp, with all-wheel drive and a five-door hatchback design, it blends the agility of the GR Yaris with everyday usability. In its fourth year, Toyota has enhanced the chassis, increased mid-range torque, and updated the suspension for a sharper and more exhilarating driving experience.
During testing at Sonoma Raceway, each iteration of the GR Corolla showcased significant improvements: from the original 2023 model to the 2025 update with aerodynamic tweaks, reinforced chassis hardware, and new dampers. The 2026 version adds 13 meters of structural adhesive, increasing chassis rigidity and optimizing suspension response, directly inspired by the GR Corolla TC race cars competing in the TC America Series.
Track performance highlights the model’s evolution. With torque distribution adjustable between 60:40 front-biased and 30:70 rear-biased, the handling is predictable and near-neutral, with enhanced mid-range push. The quick-spooling turbo keeps power flowing, while Toyota’s intelligent manual transmission allows smooth shifts and maintains engine momentum even through tight corners and low-speed maneuvers.

Off-road, the GR Corolla impresses with its gravel-road capabilities. The “Gravel” mode provides a 50:50 torque split, unlocking AWD traction and delivering fun without compromising control. Thanks to the drivetrain design and rear differential setup, the hatchback can be easily drifted and rotated, offering a driving experience few competitors in its class can match.
The interior, while functional, still reflects its entry-level roots, sharing elements with the standard Corolla line. However, Toyota’s focus on suspension, powertrain, and chassis proves that the 2026 GR Corolla prioritizes excitement and performance over luxury. With substantial upgrades and a lively, agile character on both track and open roads, this sporty hatchback solidifies its status as one of the most thrilling options in its segment.
