Charles Leclerc Escapes Penalty After Pit-Lane Crash With Lando Norris

Ferrari fined €10,000 after chaotic Singapore practice clash between Leclerc and Norris.

Charles Leclerc has avoided personal punishment after a pit-lane collision with Lando Norris during a dramatic practice session at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. Instead, the FIA handed Ferrari a €10,000 fine, ruling that the team–not the driver–was at fault in the bizarre incident.

A Chaotic Session at Marina Bay
The second practice session at Marina Bay was already filled with red flags after crashes from George Russell and Liam Lawson. With time running out, teams rushed to send their cars back on track. In the scramble, Leclerc was released from his garage directly into the path of Norris, whose McLaren ended up stuck in the barrier with a broken front wing. Mechanics from both teams had to free the Brit’s car, further delaying the session.

Both drivers were summoned by the stewards, but after hours of review, officials concluded that Ferrari gave unclear instructions during the pit release. The FIA explained that Leclerc’s view was blocked by his onboard camera and he relied on his mechanic’s signals, which were misjudged amid the confusion of multiple cars leaving at once.

McLaren’s Bigger Picture
For Norris, the crash comes at a critical moment. The 25-year-old is trying to cut into the 25-point gap to teammate Oscar Piastri while also fending off Max Verstappen’s late-season charge. Meanwhile, McLaren only need 13 points this weekend to secure the constructors’ championship, adding extra weight to every lap around the unforgiving Singapore street circuit.

Leclerc downplayed the incident afterward, calling it an unfortunate mix of “confusion and timing” during a hectic session. While Ferrari absorbed the financial hit, the real damage could be to Norris’ race preparation, with both momentum and machinery compromised heading into Sunday’s night showdown.
