2027 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Takes on a 505-Mile Desert Race

Chevrolet has put the redesigned 2027 Silverado ZR2 through one of its toughest real-world tests yet. The off-road pickup tackled 505 miles of Nevada desert in the Vegas to Reno race with a new 6.6-liter V8.

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 has already faced a serious test before reaching dealerships. Chevrolet entered its next-generation off-road pickup in the 2026 Casey Folks Vegas to Reno race, putting the truck through 505 miles of demanding Nevada terrain.

The event gave the new Silverado ZR2 its first competitive off-road outing in the Stock Production Truck Full class. Chevrolet also entered a Colorado ZR2 in the Stock Production Mini/Mid category. Both trucks were prepared with nearly all of their production components intact.

The Silverado completed the course in 11 hours and 43 minutes, averaging 43.1 mph. Chevrolet says that pace was 1.1 mph faster than its previous record pace, even after the team stopped for a complete brake pad replacement roughly 300 miles into the race.

A New 6.6-Liter V8 Powers the ZR2

The biggest mechanical change for the new Silverado ZR2 sits under the hood. Chevrolet’s sixth-generation 6.6-liter V8 produces 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft of torque, giving the truck substantially more power for high-speed desert running.

The ZR2 also comes with 35-inch mud-terrain tires, a two-inch factory lift and front and rear electronic locking differentials. A dedicated off-road hood with a larger power dome further separates the ZR2 from the rest of the Silverado lineup.

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 tackles Nevada desert terrain during the 505-mile Casey Folks Vegas to Reno race.

Those numbers matter because the Vegas to Reno course is not a simple high-speed run. The route includes dry lake beds, rocky canyons and desert valleys, forcing the truck to deal with constantly changing surfaces.

Chevrolet also used the Legends Rally in July as a shakedown event before committing to the full 505-mile race. That gave the engineering team an opportunity to evaluate the truck before its first major desert challenge.

The Drivers Had to Read the Desert

Veteran drivers Chad Hall and Chris Woo handled the Chevrolet entries. For the engineering team, their experience was considered an important part of the package.

Desert racing is not simply about driving as fast as possible. Drivers have to anticipate changes in terrain and decide how aggressively the truck can attack each obstacle without overstressing the vehicle.

Tim Demetrio, GM performance engineering group manager, described that judgment as a critical part of finishing the race.

The production 2027 Silverado ZR2 uses a two-inch lift, 35-inch mud-terrain tires and a suspension package developed for demanding off-road conditions.

The challenge is especially difficult when the truck encounters a dip, whoop section or large pothole at speed. A driver has to understand whether an obstacle can be attacked at 40 mph or whether slowing to 4 mph is the safer choice.

That balance is one reason Chevrolet kept the race trucks extremely close to production specification.

Multimatic DSSV Dampers Keep the Truck Under Control

Both Chevrolet race trucks used Multimatic DSSV dampers, a technology already well known within the ZR2 family.

For the 2027 Silverado ZR2, Chevrolet has enhanced the damper system and added jounce control dampers. The setup is designed to help the truck remain composed over high-speed desert sections, rocky trails and large impacts.

The jounce dampers were previously introduced on the Colorado ZR2 Bison. Their role is to give the suspension more capacity when the truck hits large whoops or potholes.

The next-generation Silverado ZR2 uses desert-race-proven suspension technology while keeping its production-based configuration.

Chevrolet has worked with Multimatic for more than a decade, and the relationship has helped transfer competition technology into production off-road trucks.

The objective is not just to survive rough terrain. The suspension also has to preserve the comfort and control expected from a road-going Silverado.

The Race Started in Reverse for Its 30th Anniversary

The 2026 Vegas to Reno event had another unusual feature. Instead of following its traditional route from Las Vegas to Reno, the race ran from Reno toward Las Vegas for the first time.

That changed the opening section of the course. Competitors started in Dayton, Nevada, where the terrain was slower and rockier than the flatter sections normally encountered around the Las Vegas starting area.

For the new Silverado, that meant the truck had to demonstrate its suspension control and traction almost immediately.

Chevrolet’s Production Truck Survived the Full Distance

The biggest takeaway from the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 test is how closely the race truck remained connected to the production vehicle.

The Silverado completed all 505 miles while keeping its air conditioning running and retaining the comfort features of a normal production truck. Driver Chris Woo specifically highlighted the cabin space and comfort, saying those features helped reduce the mental fatigue that builds during a long desert race.

That matters because Chevrolet is presenting the ZR2 as both an off-road flagship and an everyday pickup.

The 2027 Silverado ZR2 Has Already Been Put to the Test

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 has now completed one of the toughest demonstrations Chevrolet could give its new off-road pickup before it reaches customers.

A new 6.6-liter V8, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, a two-inch lift, locking differentials and upgraded Multimatic suspension helped the truck cover 505 miles of Nevada desert in 11 hours and 43 minutes.

More importantly, Chevrolet did it with a truck that remained heavily based on production hardware. The Vegas to Reno run therefore served as both a racing challenge and a real-world validation exercise for the redesigned ZR2.

With dealership arrival still ahead, the desert has already provided the new Silverado with a particularly demanding first test.
